Child with fever Covid retest? Phone Dr/111?

I’m not doing nothing or just asking MN but would definitely value MN perspective.

A couple of days ago DS7 and I did Covid tests after research invite from Zoe app not because of symptoms.

Today DS spent half the day flopping on sofa or in bed complaining of a headache, off food and was shivery and hot at tea time so I gave calpol and he perked up in bed and ate / drank/ watched a video.
He was totally flopped out at 8.30 and seemed pretty hot, by then I had a thermometer and it read 40.5 which seems high. Oximeter reading fine.

Dr John Campbell says automatically reducing fever isn’t always a good idea but this seemed high so I gave ibuprofen and it’s now 39.8ish. Meanwhile trying to google whether to book drive through test and 111 site glitchy, briefly said call an ambulance then crashed.

Should I book a drive through test for tomorrow if available given we posted one off yesterday, no results yet. Isolate? Call a doctor?

My instinct says keep a close eye on him overnight but don’t panic.

Any advice appreciated. I also need a handhold because I am trying to finish his DLA form tonight.

That is a very high and dangerously temperature if it is accurate.

If it is, I’d be calling our OOH GP number

Now 39.3 on scan type thermometer, measures me as 36.8

I’d call your OOh service. That’s high, especially after medication.

Fwiw, I’d always suggest paracetamol rather than ibuprofen for a fever

DrCindyPops · 05/02/2021 21:47

For that temp I would call a doctor, you probably won't settle without proper reassurance anyway.

Call 111 & see what they recommend. I hope she feels better soon Thanks

KindKylie · 05/02/2021 21:49

That's a v high temp, I wouldn't leave that without medical advice tonight.

inquietant · 05/02/2021 21:51

I would ring 111 right now.

And book a covid test too, get a postal one in case too ill to leave the house

Christmasfairy2020 · 05/02/2021 22:46

Get a light and look at his throat and ring ooh

Didkdt · 05/02/2021 22:49

You’ve had a Covid test and can say so. They can do another if need be but I agree get hooked in to the Out of hours

Isabeller · 05/02/2021 22:54

Many thanks kind posters. I was off ringing 111 etc and the OOH GP was really helpful and reassuring. Feel much more confident in keeping on alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen through the night and keeping a watchful eye.

Also advised do need to redo Covid test so about to order postal. GP thinks probably something else though and will hopefully resolve over the weekend.

My DS had a temp of over 40 with chicken pox. Glad you were able to speak to the GP, fingers crossed he's on the mend soon!

SunsetGirl · 06/02/2021 09:46

Please watch for other signs of PIMS and seek medical attention if necessary! www.rcpch.ac.uk/resources/pims-covid-19-linked-syndrome-affecting-children-information-families#what-symptoms-should-i-look-out-for

Isabeller · 06/02/2021 13:51

Thank you for the link about PIMS and chicken pox experience. Not chicken pox here I think but worth remembering.

Our research-invited covid test results came back negative this morning but as GP last night said retest DS I will. If the covid test was negative I guess it wouldn’t be PIMS? My brain’s not very functional as I’m not feeling too well either but we’re getting though this with the help of Disney+
