...and wonder how the hell we're going to get through this? We've already gone through large redundancies but at the time had the belief that some travel would be possible in 2021. Now with the summer, and even the whole of 2021, under question for international travel I'm struggling to see how airlines, tour operators and travel agents can survive.

This isn't about whether it's right to stop international travel but more how a whole industry can ride this out and come out the other side.

I'm wondering the same.
I think some travel will be allowed during the Summer in an attempt to save jobs. But in all honesty, I have just moved my once in a lifetime trip to 2022- because I fear the trip will go ahead. Don't be to judgemental, it's to to a 3rd world country and I just don't fancy it at the moment.

Agreed - I cannot possibly see how anyone except those who had massive reserves and savings they will eat into will possibly survive 2 years of next to no business. Once furlough ends in April, assuming no extensions then I imagine most will be forced to make majority of staff redundant. Then it’s a case of hoping the hotels in destinations manage to survive so there’s somewhere for people to go in 2022!

You should join the Travelpreneur Lifestyle. The woman trying to recruit me is totally smashing it every week with the travel boom. She's living her best life and I'm missing out on insane commissions by not joining her team.

I am kidding. I'm just fed up of them preying on gullible people when the travel industry is in turmoil and I really feel for the genuine people working in the industry.

Trek America has already folded. I do holidays with them most years. I'm nearly too old now anyway gutted for all their amazing tour leaders. I'm sure many others have gone too.

I really, really feel for you. My passions are travel and performing arts so I know many people working in both industries and the effect this has had on travel and the arts is just so, so awful. I'm sure there are other industries too but these are the ones who have stood out to me.

Things will get back to normal, I hope. But how it plays out in the short term, I can't imagine.

Sounds trite, but you have my sincere sympathies, thoughts and prayers.

Airline employee here. We have had mass redundancies, pay cuts for those who are still employed. I still have my job but I wonder for how much longer.

The government will Bail Out the big airlines.. As the cost would be relatively small to how much the whole pandemic has cost so far.... Small companies will likely not survive I fear tho

I watched a programme about the mass retirement of airlines’ Boeing jumbo jet fleets on BBC News channel last autumn. In it, airlines had based their decisions on travel not resuming or getting back to pre-pandemic levels until 2024/25. That brought me up short at the time but may not be as outlandish as I first thought. 😞 Sorry for those if you in the industry who are facing such difficulty. 💐

2020 was supposed to celebrate 50 years of the iconic 747 jumbo jet and mass air travel. Instead, Covid 19 brought catastrophe to the aviation industry. With fleets grounded and passenger numbers in free-fall, the jumbo jet is now too big and costly to fly. From flagship to scrap - Mark Jordan joins airlines and crew now forced to fly their iconic 747s, on a final journey to the desert breakers yard.
