Unpaid Carers with CA added to Vaccine Priority Group 6

I have just seen the news (from a couple of days ago so forgive me if you've seen it) that adults in receipt of Carers Allowance are now part of priority group six.

Doesn't seem to have been widely reported, but I am so pleased. There are so many of us out there who have dependants who rely on us for whom it would have devastating consequences if we were seriously ill or worse. Without this I would be way down the list (I'm in my thirties and in good health).

I posted about this earlier too as I hadn't realised either. It is very good news as one of the things I have worried about is how we would cope if I was ill. It's nice that we get a bit of recognition for once.

Unpaid carers not in receipt of CA are also included too. It's wise to update your details with your GP to reflect this if this is your circumstance.

I’ve just been told that the new list updated yesterday has removed carers which had been added to group six on 30th December. Just looked in gov site and carers are no longer mentioned on the list.

TingTastic · 29/01/2021 14:28

Fantastic news, absolutely the right decision

I had heard of this (and quickly registered with my GP as I don't get CA) - but I can't see it there now either. My biggest worry with all of this (apart from dd catching it as she is CEV) is what happens if me & dh get ill with it at the same time and can't look after dd.

My go has just text me to say I am in band 6 because I am a career for our asd son, I do not get careers allowance becuase I work very part time and earn more than the threshold

brunetteonthebus · 29/01/2021 14:41

Well that's even better news if carers not in receipt of CA get it too. The article I read on the Carers website says Carers in receipt of CA, but I'm happy to find out that it extended past that.

I wonder how they're going to prioritise within G6. It's getting to be a very big group!

Kitkat151 · 29/01/2021 15:49

I ve just looked and it’s still there?? as footnote 3
My partner has registered at his go as my carer ( no carers allowance as we both work) .....he had to show my shielding letter. GP said likely that carers will be at the bottom of group 6 ..... which is fair enough I think.

HayCaramba · 29/01/2021 15:53

It is absolutely the right thing. Carers are massively under valued.

vickibee · 29/01/2021 15:54

I would be band 9 otherwise

Babyroobs · 29/01/2021 15:54

They need to include carers element of Universal credit in that too then as some people are still carers but won't be eligible for Carers allowance due to earnings being too high.

Kitkat151 · 29/01/2021 16:20

@vickibee

I would be band 9 otherwise
So would my partner....it will put him forward about 2 months I reckon ( for the vaccine)

Yes but those saying it has been removed are referring to info sent to vaccination centres on 27th that doesn’t have the carers mentioned anymore.

People are Stating new advice given to vaccination centres is carers are no longer on the list.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-care-home-and-healthcare-settings-posters/covid-19-vaccination-first-phase-priority-groups

This is the info they say they are now being told to use.

I’m hoping they are wrong and it is a mistake in the literature being sent out.

I am in Wales and it has been confirmed here, I am sure it is the same for England

"Health Minister Vaughan Gething said unpaid carers would be in priority group six, in line with the JCVI advice"

pinkearedcow · 29/01/2021 19:13

It's in the Green Book Covid Chapter, carers are listed in group 6

"Those who are in receipt of a carer’s allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill."
