Am I Group 4 or Group 6 with regards to asthma?

I'm on Titropium, Symbicort, Montekulast, ventolin. I don't take prednisolone continuously but have had three courses this year.
Is my asthma categorised as moderate or severe?

You'll be in group 4 if you were sent a shielding letter. Group 6 if not.

bailey999 · 12/01/2021 13:15

My husband met the criteria for shielding due to severe asthma but had to contact his GP to be added to the list. You could try that. You should be shielding (group 4) if you have more than 2 exasperations requiring steroids in the last year. Montelukast is mentioned to.

Sorry that was in reference to copd. Ignore that. You are eligible to be in group 4 if you are taking symbicort at a high enough dose though.

IkaBaar · 12/01/2021 13:22

Goodness knows! I meet both those criteria for severe asthma, but wasn’t/aren’t shielding. However I think the criteria were different here (Scotland) to England.

I assume there will be more detail nearer the time.

Have you been formally advised to shield and received the letters confirming that?

If so, priority 4

If not, quite possibly priority 6, but check with your GP to see if you do meet the CV definition. Asthma UK can probably help too.

I was thinking the tiotropium may put me in category 4 but this may not be the case.
Initially I received a shielding letter in the first lock down but not thereafter.
I've been delaying calling my surgery due to the grief involved in communicating with arsey, aggressive receptionists who will no doubt say no letter, no vaccine but my case is complex and I'm currently waiting on a respiratory referral (out of control asthma despite current meds).

I'm an asthmatic on tiotropium who has been asked to shield, I got another letter this morning for good measure. I'm not sure which of the other triggers I hit to put me in the category but I didn't have to ask.

Can you ring the British Lung Foundation or someone similar for advice?

Worldgonecrazy · 12/01/2021 15:43

What is your bmi? If it puts you at risk your go may move you up to the higher group.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/01/2021 15:47

Is that for me? My BMI is 25. (Maybe a touch more after Christmas)

bailey999 · 12/01/2021 16:03

Can you do an econsult thereby bypassing the receptionists?

PutneyHill · 12/01/2021 16:13

That's a good idea with regards to the econsult form *bailey999, thanks for that.
*FourTeaFallout, are you on any other meds apart from the tiotropium? My BMI is within a 'healthy' range.

Yeah, I'm on seretide. I'm quite regularly hospitalised with breathing difficulties and I have pretty impaired lung function after a lifetime of poorly controlled asthma. I'm wondering if my spirometry results have played a role?

PutneyHill · 12/01/2021 16:26

I'd imagine it was your spirometry results and frequent hospitalisations FourTea.
