People no longer wearing masks?

Boogie5678 · 09/01/2021 16:17

What’s going on? Today I’ve noticed in a supermarket hardly anyone wearing masks. Honestly the vast majority weren’t. I counted at least twenty people. I’ve never ever encountered this before. Why could this be? Are people losing faith in the efficacy of masks?

Most face covering offer little protection to wearer or people they have contact with. I wear medical grade ppe in shops but with a face covering you may as well just hold you hand over your mouth.
People wearing visors thinking they’re doing their bit are really kidding themselves!

Onedaysomedaynowadays · 09/01/2021 16:20

I've heard a lot of people moan about people not wearing masks through the whole pandemic and I don't really understand whether I live in a weird compliant bubble or something?

I'm in south London and I've very rarely seen someone without one in a shop, on public transport etc. There's the odd person but the vast majority seem to be complying. In recent weeks I've also noticed far more people mask wearing outdoors

VinoWitch · 09/01/2021 16:21

I have noticed this too, for the first time since this began. In a cafe (takeaway only). People queuing one way, all wearing masks. Couple (30s-ish) at till with a toddler, no masks, chatting and laughing together and at their child. As if they were oblivious. I couldn't believe it. Felt awful for the women serving who said they were fearful but there was nothing they could do. They said that despite things being worse, this was now more common.

Boogie5678 · 09/01/2021 16:24

Yes I felt like I was in one of those situations like I’d been in a bad dream and woken up to find the whole COVID outbreak wasn’t real after all. Everything seemed almost back to precovid days

Or not wearing them properly. I even saw some “doctor “ on tv wearing one not covering her nose . Ridiculous.

Btw anyone notice Germany had 1000 deaths in a day ?

Nearly all European graphs following the same path as ours.

VinoWitch · 09/01/2021 16:25

That's worrying @Imiss2019. Everybody I know is using normal face coverings. Perhaps the guidance on this should be updated but wasn't it to do with supply before?

lavenderlou · 09/01/2021 16:25

Not where I am. The opposite in fact. More people seem to be wearing them outdoors too. Our infection rate is currently running at 1500 per 100,000 though, so that might be why.

Oooft. Whereabouts are you?

Boogie5678 · 09/01/2021 16:31

I’m in Scotland

Supply would be an issue I suppose coupled with the fact that it can be quite easy to order masks that look like medical grade but don’t meet actual standards so unless people know exactly what to order and order from reputable companies we’re back to square one with face coverings.

Might do better for the tougher restrictions for numbers of people in shops and enforce the 2 meter rule, hand sanitizer etc. I don’t know what the real answer to it all is!

WhiteChocCheesecakeRocks · 09/01/2021 16:33

The dispensing pharmacist had his under his chin the whole time. None of his staff had one on at all. Even the ones serving customers.
The screen wasny much higher than chest height.

Big pharmacy in a health centre. That deals with things from beast scans to maternity not a small one.

humtar · 09/01/2021 16:35

I'm in London and when out yesterday noticed a majority of people had them on outside. I've rarely seen anyone without one in a shop.

BlackCat91 · 09/01/2021 16:38

I am in the Northeast and it is unusual to see people without a mask/ face covering in supermarkets.

Oblomov20 · 09/01/2021 16:41

Not where I am. Surrey. Every single person n Sainsbury's today.

Boogie5678 · 09/01/2021 16:42

Perhaps just a blip. It was honestly so odd!

I'm in Sheffield. If anything, compliance here has increased.

Melange99 · 09/01/2021 16:44

No, I am SW London, Surrey borders. Full compliance in supermarkets, and more people wearing them on the street etc. I see more people wearing them than before.

VinoWitch · 09/01/2021 16:44

I'm in Scotland too @Boogie5678! Oh dear...

Forgetmenot157 · 09/01/2021 16:44

I keep seeing these posts but you all must live in the same place as anywhere I have been mask wearing is very high.. At least 90-95%

I always wear one but still Believe masks don't offer the protection but are their as a physical reminder to people that we are in a pandemic and to be cautious.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/01/2021 16:44

Everyone wearing them and moving out of the way for everyone in South Norfolk.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 09/01/2021 16:48

It's about the same here, they still have to have someone handing them out for free at the local Asda though because so many people seem to go there without one. Other than that compliance seems good.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 09/01/2021 16:48

I've also seen these posts and don't find they correlate with my own experience at all. Small shops - virtually nobody not in masks. Large supermarkets - maybe 90% wearing masks. Buses - if you discount school children, where mask wearing is the exception - again, about 90%. Also in Scotland. In a covid hotspot.

RedMarauder · 09/01/2021 16:49

I'm in South London and have seen more people wearing them on the street in the last couple of days.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 09/01/2021 16:52

In a major city on Scotland here, it seems worse on the buses where on my last bus trip, out of 13 people, 7 weren't wearing masks,

MargosKaftan · 09/01/2021 16:53

In South East England outside M25 - popped into supermarket quickly this morning but most people where wearing masks with a couple of people with sunflower lanyards not doing.

Most people shopping alone as well.

I think you hit a blip unless you live in an area that's bucking the trend.

(Also decided to keep mask on on the way back to the car, its bloody freezing today and it keeps my nose toasty.)
