Just realised I can’t taste anything

In a slight panic. I woke this morning with a bit of a scratchy throat that has come and gone. In the last hour I’ve felt not quite right but not poorly, I thought my late night had caught up with me so got a can of energy drink and realised I can’t taste it properly, like it’s muted.

I’ve now tried orange juice, rum, whiskey and vodka and whilst I can feel some warmth on my tongue and a slightly muted taste, it does not taste how it should.

I have a heart condition and am overweight (though have lost 3st since this whole thing started).

I know the response is going to be “get a test”, and of course I will, but dare I say I’m a little scared.

Didn't want to read and run.

I'm sure you're frightened; I would be too. But remember, it's a mild to moderate illness for most people.

Get well soon Daffodil

lljkk · 06/01/2021 17:14

Well that's exciting....
Sorry, I can't take any of this very seriously any more.
Most people, even CEV people, come thru with no more than a bit of grottiness.
Try not to fret.
Other things can cause anosmia. You don't even know if you have anything special.

Bmidreams · 06/01/2021 17:16

I would be worried too. Of course book a test. In the meantime try and see if you can taste lots of different chocolate bars, and maybe some cakes? Wink

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 06/01/2021 17:16

What a horrible response, Iljkk. Anything special...!
OP, it's really scary but keep calm, book that test and look after yourself.

lljkk · 06/01/2021 17:21

are common colds special now? They can cause anosmia
are sinus infections special now? They can cause anosmia

bacteria, allergens... so many other germs & irritants available that we normally wouldn't be 'scared' of.

cathyandclare · 06/01/2021 17:23

Yes book a test, but try not to panic. The great majority of people are fine even with other conditions. Well done on the weight loss! I like your style with the taste test. Perhaps some gin next?

IntermittentParps · 06/01/2021 17:31

You may just have a common cold.
Thanks

Doublechins · 06/01/2021 17:47

I had the no taste thing recently with a cold. Obviously I got tested as I should have and it came back negative and I have since had two lateral flow tests (work related) and they were both negative. I think anything that gives you a stuffy nose has the potential to make you loose sense of smell/taste so it's not necessarily covid. 🤞 you get a negative result

Chunks1376 · 06/01/2021 18:33

I had the exact same thing sudden loss of taste and my test was negative so don’t be too worried at the moment.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 06/01/2021 18:35

In case it helps - I know of two people who are CEV and have both come through covid in the last few weeks - one was almost asymptomatic (tested due to another condition), the other one felt rubbish but recovered quickly and managed fine at home.

PinkyU · 06/01/2021 20:38

Thank you for all the lovely responses. I’ve been for my test, I expected to wait at least a day or two to get given what’s being reported re numbers, but I called up and was there 2 hours later.

The, mainly young, people working there were so lovely and efficient, made an unpleasant process a bit more bearable.

I’m now sitting with a wedge of Victoria sponge and a nip of whiskey (which I’m sure taste lovely Sad ), will get the dc to bed and watch funny cat clips to cheer me up and take my mind off the waiting.

Fingers crossed for you. Just tell yourself that you have a cold. Enjoy the cake, sometimes texture is better than taste.

CarrieCat · 06/01/2021 20:50

Ignore the nutter on the thread.

Anothermother3 · 06/01/2021 21:41

My DB is immunocompromised and wasn’t all that unwell when he did get it from his son. Even if it’s positive it might not be as bad as you would expect. I hope it’s negative but don’t panic if it isn’t.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 06/01/2021 21:44

Fingers crossed op.

AKissAndASmile · 06/01/2021 22:37

I’ve now tried orange juice, rum, whiskey and vodka

Bmidreams · 08/01/2021 20:22

Any results yet op?

SendHelp30 · 08/01/2021 20:26

@lljkk lovely response. I wonder whether you could forward that response to my DHs cousins family. Her funeral was today. She was 34, no health conditions. She was a critical care nurse. Her 3 children are 3,5 & 7.
I’m sure it would really comfort her husband to know she died helping fuckers like you who think this is all some kind of fucking joke.
I seriously hope you never need the care that this awful Illness sees so many desperate for.

SendHelp30 · 08/01/2021 20:27

Really hope you’re okay, OP. Try to not worry.

I'm so so sorry 😔

PinkyU · 09/01/2021 11:56

I’ve just received my results as negative, it looks like a bit of a head cold thankfully.

@SendHelp30 my deepest condolences, how awful for your family and those little ones, heartbreaking Flowers

Thank you @worriedandannoyed and @PinkyU it’s been very hard

Pinky I’m so pleased your results were negative- what a huge relief!

IntermittentParps · 09/01/2021 12:16

Yay OP!

yeOldeTrout · 09/01/2021 13:55

Thanks for update.

@lljkk

are common colds special now? They can cause anosmia are sinus infections special now? They can cause anosmia

bacteria, allergens... so many other germs & irritants available that we normally wouldn't be 'scared' of.

Interestingly, they think the anosmia from CV is neurological, damage to the nerves, rather than physiological (blocking of the receptors) like most illnesses that cause it.
