I've had a mild stomach upset for the last couple of days - just a bit of diarrhoea and a really unsettled gurgly tummy. And I have IBS so usually I'd think nothing of it, except I have been v careful with my diet and usually that prevents flareups. And this afternoon I have started smelling cigarette smoke everywhere - on my clothes, in my son's room, just random whiffs through the house. None of us smoke (well I do occasionally but never in the house and haven't for weeks - its purely a social/drinking thing). DH started feeling shivery and achy yesterday too. Neither of us have a fever or sore throat/cough. Is this the start of covid or are we just suffering from lockdown induced paranoia?
Disclaimer - I will book a test tomorrow as change to smell is a known symptom. This thread is really just idle wondering if anyone else has experienced similar....

I had a couple of weeks where I smelt a vile smoke smell, all the time. I don’t know what it meant though sorry but now I see this I wonder! I assumed it was cooking smells on my clothes but a bit strange

It's right to get tested. It's a change in your sense of smell and I have read that an symptom of Coronavirus can be things smelling different even after the person has recovered. Some people have reported smoke or a nasty rotting type of smell from things that they know don't really smell like that normally.

My colleague at work tested positive in April. She lost her sense of smell but when it came back it was different. All she could smell is smoke.
Like something is on fire.
She could smell it at home and at work so she knew it was her own sense of smell.
She still can't smell properly and gets whiffs of smoke now and then.

My sense of smell changed a few days before I developed more tangible Covid symptoms - kept smelling burnt toast and (tmi) really strong ammonia smell after i had a pee.

Get tested...

Does anyone else smell smoke?

Egghead68 · 05/01/2021 06:53

I smelt smoke when I had probable covid (no tests in those early days). I almost threw out several of my appliances because I thought they must be catching fire.

I also had an indescribably nasty taste in my mouth although that passed quickly.

Thanks all, yes I'm booking a test for today or tomorrow. Banging headache this morning too, although that's probably as I didnt sleep well.
