I can’t smell but I can taste

I have a cold - thick snot etc, but have never lost smell and taste with a cold before. (Have been for a covid year today). No smell at all, but can taste sweet things. So peppermint tea with honey is nice but not minty. Hot sauce still v hot as dh gave me hot chicken in hot sauce yesterday and my mouth was in fire. I can taste chocolate cake! But normal tastes like hot water etc. Is this normal for covid or likely to be a cold?

Book a test!

CrocodilesCry · 01/01/2021 17:27

You need a test. The definition of the symptom is a loss OR change in your sense of taste OR smell.
Hope you're ok but I've heard of a lot of people test positive with what they thought was a cold.

Lindy2 · 01/01/2021 17:27

If you've got thick snot that will stop you being able to smell. It's more symptomatic of a bad cold than Covid. However, it's sensible to have gone for a test as the symptoms vary so much and you are clearly unwell.

I hope you get a negative result and feel better soon.

AdmiralButterfly · 01/01/2021 17:28

Read the post! I had test this afternoon

Well it wasn't exactly clear was it as you said covid year not test.

AdmiralButterfly · 01/01/2021 17:31

Yes true. Blush

Haha, bloody phones and predictive text Grin Hope your test is negative

donerwillbehere · 01/01/2021 17:38

Let us know how you get non

AdmiralButterfly · 01/01/2021 17:40

Will do. I feel full of cold.
Presumably it is possible for someone to have a cold AND covid at same time anyhow.

Lots of people have cold symptoms with covid. Runny nose, sneezing and sore throat are all on the list of covid symptoms that test and trace ask about if you test positive. Hope it's just a cold for you and you feel better soon.

Pompeygirl80 · 02/01/2021 15:05

Mine started with just a blocked nose on Monday and by Wednesday lost smell and taste ! I tested positive for covid , some people only get loss of smell as a symptom

Medstudent12 · 02/01/2021 15:19

I had a cold. Bunged up nose.

Tested positive. No smell.

AndcalloffChristmas · 02/01/2021 15:27

I’d book a test. They aren’t so hard to come by at the moment as they were at that awful time in September when no one wanted to face up to needing one!

cathyandclare · 02/01/2021 15:46

I think Covid doesn't stop all taste. Some comes from taste buds on the tongue (salt, sweet, bitter, sour) but lots comes from your sense of smell, so it's normal to retail some taste.

Riv12345 · 02/01/2021 16:04

I tested positive 3 days ago
No taste or smell and I ache like mad 😠
I had a headache but a little cough but that's all gone now!

I'm just a little miserable really
