COVID app - alerts only with venue check in?

Those who had been alerted by the app to self isolate, have you been checking into shops etc or does the app track you anyway?

Only a very few places I go to ask me to scan myself in or make the smart code visible.

Or does it just track us all anyway regardless?

It uses Bluetooth to interact with other phones with the app. It doesn't rely on checking in to venues
