200 skiers flee swiss resort rather than isolate....Where's the media outrage that previous holiday makers had? 🤔

What I find interesting about this, is when people were desperately scrambling to get home from their family holidays in Tenerife in the summer, there was outrage in the media about irresponsible stupid tourists, putting people at risk over their own selfish want to go on holiday. Called "thick" or "stupid" for not knowing quarantines could be imposed at any time...

But there is none of that with this news story at all. Both are equally irresponsible but only one group are open for scorn and name calling. There always seems to be some kind of classist bias towards covid reporting.

Massive queues when primark opened? "Plebs putting us all at risk for cheap clothes"
The queue at selfridges when we went out were massive. Where were the press there?

Sorry pressed send too soon. Meant to say, for some reason this is starting to bother me. Anyone else?

I think it's a bit different.

The people in Tenerife were free to finish their holiday and enjoy themselves. They just had to isolate in their own homes when they returned.

The people in Switzerland were being confined to their hotel rooms for the duration of their holidays.

I'm not saying I agree with what they did. But even the Swiss law enforcers were saying they understood it.

TammyHullfigure · 28/12/2020 14:01

Hmm I wonder? Posh gits who work in the media/banking etc. Common people going on holiday is irresponsible, posh people are entitled to their ski breaks. Angry

Cornettoninja · 28/12/2020 14:01

Depends where you’re looking; I’ve seen plenty of outrage at both..

TroubadorinTrouble · 28/12/2020 14:49

You’ve correctly identified that there is a media bias against people at the lower end of the social-economic spectrum.

annevonkleve · 28/12/2020 14:53

I wouldn't expect anything different from entitled ski-ers. Along with cruises, they fall under the most climate-damaging holidaymakers out there. Unless you live in Aviemore and ski locally.

MercyBooth · 28/12/2020 15:47

There was one very prominent poster on here who kept on insisting that there was less compliance from the working class and comparing shoppers at Waitrose v. Asda as an example.

And Ive mentioned the ski trippers on here before.

onedayinthefuture · 28/12/2020 15:49

Like Kate and Wills leaving London for Norfolk and taking the kids on a Christmas outing, not forgetting their panto trip the week before.

Mistigri · 28/12/2020 15:52

It's because of who these people were. It's not a place where ordinary tourists holiday - Swiss ski resorts tend to be for the well heeled.

Apparently Andy Wigmore of Brexit party fame was among the people who did a runner.

Barbie222 · 28/12/2020 15:55

I think it's at least partly because the Swiss brought in the quarantine law after they arrived and backdated it so they didn't know they had to quarantine until they were at the resort. It's silly to go on holiday atm for all sorts of reasons but I do have some sympathy with them as on this occasion they were trapped.

Walkaround · 28/12/2020 16:27

@Barbie222 - trapped, my arse. Clearly not!

tootyfruitypickle · 28/12/2020 17:19

But they took a risk holidaying at this time .

I can completely imagine the type of people they were.

GawdrestyeJerryMentlemen · 28/12/2020 17:26

I am outraged. Posh tossers who seem to enjoy making others suffer anyway, so why should this be any different.

merrymouse · 28/12/2020 17:34

Both are equally irresponsible but only one group are open for scorn and name calling.

No they aren't.

At the time when people started to travel for their summer holidays infection rates were going down.

It's difficult to understand how any UK holiday makers thought it OK to travel to Switzerland. Were they all travelling on private jets from the Scilly Isles?

merrymouse · 28/12/2020 17:37

I can completely imagine the type of people they were.

Yes - the kind of people who can't imagine a situation they can't control with money.

MercyBooth · 28/12/2020 20:21

Trouble is a lot of people like to punch down instead of up. Its why the masks in shops threads and family Christmas threads move much quicker.

ScrabbleScribbles · 28/12/2020 21:13

The Swiss chose to open their ski resorts when most of their European neighbours agreed to keep them closed for the common good. Then they didn't like the consequences.

Nobody has exactly come out of this situation looking good.

museumum · 28/12/2020 21:20

The Swiss opened them for themselves fir their own outdoor exercise. But idiot holiday makers can’t keep away. Scottish ski resorts would love to open for locals but can’t trust those of us further south not to travel there. It’s selfish idiots spoiling everything for everyone.

MercyBooth · 28/12/2020 23:13

And right on cue, from another thread.

I was talking to a relation on the phone tonight and her adult son had said to her ‘...mother...their are more flaming bubbles on this estate than a jacuzzi

I saw that, but didn't understand it. What did the poster mean?Confused

Did the tourists break into the hotel? I suspect not so they must have been allowed in at the time.

Maybe they didn't flee, this is a piece with sources: www.wheretoskiandsnowboard.com/blogs/what-really-happened-in-verbier/
