Loss of smell and taste

I have been poorly and had a test on Xmas day. Still awaiting results. I had a mild fever but my main symptoms have been a total loss of smell or taste. I can't smell or taste anything since 3 days. I know a lot of people have had this from old threads. Can you share how long did it take you to regain this (hopefully it you have)? Have anyone tried any treatment. I will call the GP when they open next week but not sure there is any treatment as such.

If it's Covid (seems likely) then it might be a few days/weeks or maybe longer.
DD has had a reduced sense of smell for maybe 2 weeks and has tested positive. Other than that she seems quite well
Not sure there is anything the GP can give you.

Thanks, seems the same case for me. I can barely eat anything, everything tastes acidic or chemical like to me. Just tried to eat some rice to keep my energy up.

It took my partner about 6 weeks to regain his

I had Covid about six weeks ago, I’m upto about 30/40% taste and 20% smell

Beamur · 26/12/2020 20:08

That sounds a bit miserable. Hope you feel better soon. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids.

Mine took 8 weeks to come back fully. My sense of smell gradually returned after 6 weeks and taste soon after. It’s lovely to have it back. I have lost it for longer with sinusitis in the past, it’s awful not having it

Hi OP. I lost both taste and smell back in March and had pretty much NOTHING for two months. I even tested my smell with a full nappy up very close to my nose and nope ... nothing. Since coming back though it’s been all mixed up and certain foods taste ‘wrong’ - coffee (Jesus, why coffee??), onions, meats (tried pate once and almost hurled). Smell also mixed up - soap, deodorant and shampoo etc have a horrid metallic/chemical smell and for months they turned my stomach (still do). Lavender especially vile for some reason. Apparently it may come back eventually but it’s a big knock sideways. Check abscent.org website as they have some ideas about smell retraining. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks everyone, just got a positive test result. Feeling scary. I always wore masks if I went out and took precautions. Get food delivered and wfh. I keep thinking where I have caught it. :( it's really scary how easily you can catch this!

I got Covid the first week of October. Smell is ok but taste only about 80%. Hope you soon feel better.

I caught it off my husband, I’ve worked from home throughout but he hasn’t and he started with symptoms first. Oddly, he never lost his!
