App telling me to self isolate for 12 days but I haven’t been anywhere!

Just that really. Just had the dreaded alert that I need to self isolate for 12 days (tier 4 area), assuming this means I’ve been in close contact with someone 2 days ago as it’s 14 days from last contact (tho I thought this was now 10). The only place I went on Monday was to our corner shop and was there for about 3 minutes (did notice a couple of people without masks). Really odd tho as the app says you’re only classed as a close contact if it’s 15 minutes or longer. We’re not seeing anyone anyway and I’ll obviously do as asked but just baffled as to how this has happened 🤔

I think there's a bit in the app that shows you the checks it makes and when the contact would have been. And yes its only 10 days now not 14. Have you checked if your app needs updating?

CabinClose · 23/12/2020 17:56

Odd. I wonder if they’ve changed the close contact definition due to the new variant?

stillfeelingmad · 23/12/2020 17:58

We got one from when our neighbours tested positive!! Obviously less than 2m in a terraced house adjacent rooms. Zero actual contract though unless it can permeate walls

Lumene · 23/12/2020 17:59

I got an app message saying my test was negative. I hadn’t needed to take or taken a test.

I wondered this as we are semi detached and I have heard about this happening but surely my husband would have received an alert too?

It was 14 days from the day after contact so presumably the contact occurred on Sunday rather than Monday (so that day one was Monday).

Ah ok .. but I didn’t go anywhere on Sunday either 🤔

The app can't see walls so many people I know got that alert after a next door neighbour tested positive 🙄

Sunflowergirl1 · 23/12/2020 18:03

A mate got a notification to isolate when she had been at home in bed and during recuperation her phone didn't leave home!!!

I know a lot are switching it off as they don't trust it

PTW1234 · 23/12/2020 18:06

It’s not just 15 minutes and 2 meters, it’s a bit more complicated that. Details of the algorithm can be found here:

Although saying that I got one of the “you have been close but not close enough” notifications driving down the motorway.. as it doesn’t see walls.

Yes I was just reading that on the app. I haven’t left the house for 5 days (except the corner shop on Monday) and I’m now trying to think what deliveries we’ve had in that time. I did have a big Tesco shop delivered on Sunday morning but the driver stood well away (most of the time). Tho I’m now thinking if he’s tested positive since then probably all the people he’d delivered to that day would be ‘pinged’. We do have voluntary community testing going on in my area so lots are getting tested without symptoms.

Can you find the bit that shows the checks it made and when the positive match was

thetinselbadge · 23/12/2020 18:17

I had a similar thing, mine pinged when I'd not been anywhere and narrowing down the days meant it was most likely a tradesman who did some external work, all socially distanced/online payment and nowhere near us in the actual house. I did think neighbours but we are detached and our living room and bedroom are on the side with no neighbours. Who knows!

It says ‘encounter date’ was Monday so it must have been the corner shop 😬

I would just ignore it tbh. You clearly were not in close contact with anyone. Not a legal requirement. But in tier 4 there’s nowhere to go anyway!

Ozzie9523 · 30/12/2020 15:35

Update - positive test result this morning 😩Took 5 days! Luckily I haven’t been anywhere.

Do you have any symptoms?

StartingOver2020 · 30/12/2020 15:39

Where do you think you picked it up?

Brownfrown · 30/12/2020 15:43

You caught coronavirus from 3 minutes in a shop? Crikey.
Well I hope you’re ok. Yikes!

Dizzywizz · 30/12/2020 15:53

Oh no! How are you feeling?

Ozzie9523 · 30/12/2020 16:02

No symptoms at all, but panicking a bit obviously! As they do say you can start off ok but get worse. Fingers crossed 🤞 I’m in South Essex and it’s rife here. Maybe the App notification was nothing to do with it and I got it elsewhere before then, there’s no way of knowing is there. I could have already had it when I went out on the 21st! This is the problem isn’t it. Plus we have two school age children so maybe they’ve had it and gave it to me. Their schools were very hard hit before they broke up for Christmas. Thing us it’s so hard to know where you picked it up, we had a Christmas Day out at a farm on the 12th so now thinking it could have been there if it can take up to 2 weeks to appear. I reckon there’s thousands of asymptomatic people walking around with it completely oblivious.

Northernsoullover · 30/12/2020 16:02

Bloody hell! Just goes to show. I'm about to finish a 10 day isolation requested by the app. Like yourself I only went out for a brief shop and I've been both pissed off and resigned to it.
I am feeling ok though. I hope you aren't feeling too unwell with it.

PTW1234 · 30/12/2020 16:31

Oh wow!

I wonder if they are going to or already have updated the algorithm for the new variant?

Hope you feel better soon.
