‘Let’s take bets on how high deaths will be in January’

From my close family in a group chat. I’m fucked off at them anyway for constantly being around each other’s houses in Tier 3, but whatever, have stopped being the resident whinger.

But this really annoyed off today. It’s like this whole thing is happening on another planet and we can discuss it detachedly while having a cup of tea and a biscuit. It’s crass as it is, but they meet up with my mum who has a number of health conditions... Again, her choice, but maybe don’t talk about tallying deaths as though it’s impossible for it to ever affect you.

Do people actually think this way?

I assume it's a coping mechanism.

FOJN · 22/12/2020 15:38

That's quite distasteful. I hope for the best but fear the worst.

TheHalloweenFairy · 22/12/2020 15:38

That’s pretty poor taste. Making light of people dying horrible deaths? As PP said, I hope this is her coping mechanism and she doesn’t actually find it funny

I have a crass sense of humour. I might say that if I was drunk.
Laughing at painful things is a way of coping with painful things.

DrunkenKoala · 22/12/2020 16:08

Do they believe this isn’t real? Do they think people aren’t going to die?

Covidrelapse · 22/12/2020 17:35

I clicked to tell you it was a disgusting guessing game then read your OP. Very distasteful

Gallows humour.
