DS positive. I’m symptomatic too - but I tested negative

Yesterday my 15 year old DS and I were both tested for coronavirus and our results came back first thing this morning to say he is positive and I am negative.
The strange thing is I have probably felt a little worse than him and I’m really surprised my test was negative as his was positive! I’m sure I did the test correctly.
I have a scratchy throat, a tickly cough, a horrible taste in my mouth which is making everything taste weird and I have had a headache bad enough for paracetamol for around 5 days now.
He has a scratchy throat, a slight loss of taste and smell. He was feeling a bit cold and had a mild headache over the weekend and had a very low grade temperature (which was what prompted us to book the tests)
Isn’t it strange how both of us have similar symptoms but only one of us tests positive? 🤷‍♀️

Not so strange. Lots of false negatives!

AlexaShutUp · 22/12/2020 11:11

Probably a false negative, OP. Hope you feel better soon.

I tested negative when my husband tested positive. We had exactly the same symptoms. I tested positive a couple of days later. I would assume you would too if you took another test.

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/12/2020 11:15

False negatives are not uncommon, even w patients in ICU. Get well soon.

BornInTheWrongCentury · 22/12/2020 12:13

Thank you all, yes I think I will have assume mine is a false negative then as it’s so likely I have it too as I’m feeling like this.
Dh has just booked himself a test for this afternoon as he has convinced himself he has it as well (I think that’s mostly psychological Hmm!) DS 15 is currently feeling ok, Ds8 is completely fine and is currently bouncing around the house so fingers crossed all of us will be ok - I will be so grateful if this is as bad as it gets for us!

I think given how you feel, and your DS's positive result, I would be quite confident that you do have it, too.

It's quite scary really. You have the ability to look at your situation and realise that you probably do have it - but what about people who have symptoms but no other people to compare results with? They could be out and about spreading it, thinking they just had a cold/allergies/whatever else the symptoms can be similar to.

mumof1879 · 22/12/2020 12:58

We had the same. My son tested positive then me. Both my other children then developed worse symptoms than my son but tested negative?! They had been isolating already so can’t see how they had picked up anything but the Covid already in the house?!

Just to update DH result came back - it was negative too!

We’re wondering now if we’ve both had it mildly and are at the tail end so it’s not showing up now (although tbh I still feel quite rubbish) My DS hadn’t been to school for 11 days as isolating due to a case in his year (no one he knows) so although it’s possible he picked it up there it certainly took a while for him to be symptomatic if that’s the case... anyway I had a scratchy throat first by a couple of days?
Youngest was also sent into isolation at the same time as his brother so it’s unlikely it’s from him. I don’t work so unlikely it came from me but my DH is a taxi driver so he may have brought it home although he’s hardly been working tbh and has been really careful.
I guess we’ll never know if we’ve had it unless offered antibody tests in the future...
I feel like no one believes me now that I don’t feel well or am being dramatic/stealing my sons thunder! Blush lol
The main thing is DS15 is feeling ok, he’s just a big headachy and tired but he’s still managing to play on the PlayStation, revise, eat etc so that’s good Smile
