I wonder how long we will be in Tier 4?

Hancock suggests a few months. Hopefully by next Christmas we will be back in Tier 3.

Wondering won't help. It is constant speculation by the press and people on forums that is fuelling all those who are anxious anyway. Just stop it.

Calmandmeasured1 - this is a discussion forum is is not? So I am free to post.

Next Christmas in Tier 3?

Boris has said in his last couple of conferences that they hope for a normal Christmas next year, or at least close to normal

Tier 4 is a complete lockdown, they can't keep you in complete lockdown for a whole year

We were also told we would be near normal by this Christmas. Now they are dangling the carrot to Easter...I think they know it’s going to be much longer but if they told everyone this is life for the foreseeable there would be riots and much lower rates of compliance

ODFOD. People are still free to question, wonder, speculate and complain as much as they wish. Stay away from it if you don't like it.

Until most of us have had the vaccine. I wonder when that will be? Have they said?

Cecily42 · 20/12/2020 12:02

My guess is a month in Tier 4 for London where I live and then Tier 3 at least out March.

We don't know if the vaccine is effective against this new strain, we could be back to square 1, which means tier 4 for the whole country through most of next year.
HermioneMakepeace · 20/12/2020 12:03

I thought it WAS effective against the new strain?

HelloMissus · 20/12/2020 12:04

Until the elderly and ECV have been vaccinated and are no longer taking up hospital beds with Covid.

Lifeispassingby · 20/12/2020 12:04

To vaccinate all of the most vulnerable and elderly by Easter they need to do the number the did in the first week every day which isn’t going to happen tbh

Brunt0n · 20/12/2020 12:06

No wonder everyone’s mental health is shot to shit with threads like this to read huh? 🥴

BlueBrian · 20/12/2020 12:07

They haven't said is isn't effective against the new strain, but if it isn't, it's hardly going to be news they're going to rush out before Christmas

SpnBaby1967 · 20/12/2020 12:08

I think Tier 4 will last until we all stop the virus even existing and we all become resistant to death. So at least until the year 3000.

Buts it's ok, we'll have holographic zoom calls by then.

They quite literally have no possible way to know that. The strain was only identified early December and there’s no way a vaccine could be tested on it.

What was said is there is no reason that they know of. How you interpret that depends on whether you’re an optimist or a pessimist.

Frazzled2207 · 20/12/2020 12:38

i think there will be a tier 4 until march/april at least sadly but some areas might be taken out/added. Or they might say sod it and put us all into tier 4. It's a very tough call but on balance probably right to put some of the country, rather than all of the country, in tier 4 right now. If it needs to be all of the country though, I hope they do it when they need to do it not three weeks late like every other decision.

Frazzled2207 · 20/12/2020 12:40

ps re vaccines. Vaccines are generally designed to work with new strains and I read yesterday that there have been 12,000 strains so far. Also, generally speaking, when they become more transmissable they become less dangerous. Hopefully we'll know the score for sure soon but MH was still quite clear this morning on TV that vaccines were our way out of this.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be worried but am not necessarily buying the 'new strain' panic - I think it's a convenient way of the government coming up for a reason to do now what they should have done a fortnight ago.

I don't know I think it's the the light at the end of the tunnel, which was actually an on coming train, that's making it so hard.

If we knew we've got to knuckle down for another year, that would be more helpful than believing it's almost over if it's not.

AuntieStella · 20/12/2020 12:44

It will all depend on the vaccine manufacturers fulfilling orders promptly

If we have to wait between deliveries then it could take much longer.

I doubt we will see much relaxation at all until at least priority 4 (CEV) have been done, and then most after priority 6 (CV)

It's 5 weeks from first jab to 'safety' (assuming you are not in the unlucky 10% for whom it doesn't work). Not clear when they expect to finish priorities 1&2 (the ones underway) or when further deliveries of vaccine will arrive

Well to be fair, they said at the start of this pandemic that they hoped THIS Christmas would be normal. They said only last week that we could mix for 5 days with 3 families. Things change quickly, nobody can predict a pandemic.
