Can I travel back to Sheffield from London? HELP

I travelled down from Sheffield to London yesterday to see family over Christmas, I actually do not even know anymore whether this was against the rules - technically probably yes but I am staying in a hotel and am in isolation apart from seeing family and friends outside at the park. Now with this Tier 4 news I have no idea what to do, I am supposed to travel back up to Sheffield on the 27th but now we aren't allowed to leave London and 'face arrest' if we do according to the metro? I can't afford to stay at the hotel indefinitely, my family would be breaking rules to let me stay with them and have no space anyway, can anyone please tell me what to do because I feel physically sick with stress. Will I be fined for getting on a train back to Sheffield? If I'm not allowed what am I physically supposed to do, be homeless?

Can you catch a train tonight? I think you’re “allowed” to leave London before midnight.

Montgomerystubercles · 19/12/2020 20:34

You should go home ASAP. Here is the paragraph in the (latest) guidance.

If you are already on holiday in a Tier 4 area, you should return to your home as soon as practical.

thisislovelyme · 19/12/2020 20:42

Head home now OP, sorry you're going through this.

TokyoSushi · 19/12/2020 20:42

I'd get a train back as quickly as you can.

peridito · 19/12/2020 20:43

Please try not to panic @soleromimi ,leaving as soon as practical is quite open ended .

Have a look here www.eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk/covid-19

Can you change your ticket ? Go by coach ?I would try and book something asap. But they absolutely will have to allow people to leave over the next few days .

superstar84 · 19/12/2020 20:44

I would aim to leave but imagine it's chaos at the statins at the moment so would be tempted to let the rush go

Have you heard from the hotel if they are closing?

Stay safe

BigGreen · 19/12/2020 20:49

Return home whenever you are able, don't worry about it. This is a last minute rule change, no one will punish you for trying to follow the rules in good faith.

soleromimi · 19/12/2020 20:54

Thanks everyone, the stations are absolutely rammed at the moment from the looks of videos on social media, surely they can't stop people from going back to their own homes? I can see myself trying to walk back just to avoid the total fucking fear of seeing a policeman on the train

I’ve nothing practical to suggest but you have my sympathy.

Your situation is a result of the government applying strict rules instead of providing practical, pragmatic advice.

inquietant · 19/12/2020 21:07

If you live in Sheffield you can return home of course.

What you can't do is visit Sheffield if you live in London.

Good luck!

Rosehip10 · 19/12/2020 21:10

Police will not be demanding people show papers before boarding trains ffs. Just travel when you can.
