Anyone had a strange menstrual cycle/period after Covid?

I had Covid about three weeks ago but am recovered. My period came yesterday and it is really heavy (TMI sorry, but my menstrual cup overflowed within about an hour of being emptied - this would normally take many many hours). I've also had some clots which is abnormal for me.

Anyone else had any menstrual issues after having Covid? It's very odd that I've never had these symptoms before Hmm

I just found out I had a positive test today. My period finished today. But it was uncharacteristically heavy. Not as you describe, but for me, very heavy. Coincidence most likely but who knows.

I’ve not had covid that I’m aware of, but I have had my cycle messed up by nasty viruses a couple of times before (also by stress and long haul plane flights!). Your body is under stress, it’s not surprising. I hope it resolves itself quickly for you

A few weeks ago there was another thread on here about post covid menstrual effects. It does seem to be a thing.

Thanks for the replies, hmm yeah could be stress - my whole family getting Covid one by one and isolating for three weeks wasn't exactly calming Grin

I tested pos at the weekend , due on today but don't feel like it's even close 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, my period post COVID was especially heavy, and quick. Also lots of leg pain/dull ache in the build up. I am due on in a few days again so I will monitor..

After having COVID my overall opinion of it is that it attacks all the systems of your body; I had terrible neurological disturbance (still do), digestive system issues, and it would make sense that it could attack your reproductive system too. I have heard that one common symptom in men recognised in Europe as a need to test is heavy painful testicles so there may be some truth in that theory

Yes - my period was a few days late when I had Covid, seemed quite heavy and my next period came early and was very light!

cakeallday · 19/12/2020 09:41

Glad it's not just me! Such a weird virus.

I had my period over the time I had COVID which was a reallll joy 😫 it was really heavy. More than normal for sure..

My sister was badly for 2 months, no sex, on the pill & she skipped 2 periods even with her withdrawal week.

Eeugh this is not good to read. I’m at home isolating after a positive test. Few days ago I thought my period was about to start but then it stopped.

I usually taken tranexamic acid for heavy bleeding but plan to not take it this month as it’s a blood clotting drug - so prob not sensible to take this month.

I was positive in October. My period whilst I was positive was bang on 28 days. My next one was a week late and then I got my next one 2 weeks early.

I am peri-menopausal so just put it down to that. However, my main symptom of being perimenopausal has been missed periods altogether, on the whole they do seem to still be roughly following the 28 days. I have never in my 36 years of periods had one come 2 weeks early so maybe there is a covid link?

I was diagnosed with Covid just before New Year’s. Had fairly mild symptoms and seemed to be recovering well until my period arrived 5 days ago. It wasn’t late or anything but I’ve had severe cramps and bloating like I’ve never experienced in my life. The pains are in my stomach, back and legs and feel like labour pains. I actually look about 5 months pregnant too as I’m so bloated. My Covid headache and the fatigue have also returned, Ive hardly been able to do anything over the past few days. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m 40 and my periods are normally manageable. It could of course be perimenopause given my age but my symptoms are so severe I feel it must be connected to Covid.

I have the Mirena and had pretty much stopped bleeding altogether. On the day I lost my sense of taste and smell with (supposed not confirmed by test) Covid back in March, I started bleeding. That period / bleeding continued for about 3 months (!) sometimes heavy, sometimes as spotting, until my sense of taste and smell started to return as normal. So weird. I haven’t bled at all since July so am assuming I’m back to some sort of “normality”. DH and I have had coughs again since yesterday so having to go for tests just in case we are +ve but hoping not, as reinfection is apparently rare. But who knows, this virus is so weird

Skyliner001 · 16/01/2021 09:57

After Covid periods stopped for three months, then came back light for two then back to normal

ShastaBeast · 16/01/2021 10:14

Suspected covid in March and I had lots of short cycles and one long, 16-22 days then 38 days. More cramping than usual since too. Cycle was back to normal in September. Also massively bloated but not period related, upper abdomen so stomach. The coughing was pretty severe.

Wineloffa · 16/01/2021 10:19

Thanks for your replies. Such a strange virus! Interesting that it affects menstrual cycles too. I’m hoping this is a once-off as I was so recently diagnosed and things will be back to normal next month but who knows..
