I am no Tory but I always remember Tobias Elwood for how he tried to help Keith Palmer:

herecomestheSon · 17/12/2020 06:43

Note it was a "Covid-complaint event"[sic]

megletthesecond · 17/12/2020 06:45

I had him down as one of the good guys too. (I'm not a tory).

herecomestheSon · 17/12/2020 06:45

and also, @Flyingin, I have a positive general impression of this gentleman, who has been at times a hero

megletthesecond · 17/12/2020 06:49

Sorry, I sounded really harsh. What he did to help on that awful day in Westminster still stands.

YellowHighlighterPen · 17/12/2020 06:51

Yup I know it's double standards and whatever but I wouldn't be jumping up and down about this one.

mrsnec · 17/12/2020 06:58

I was once a victim of a brutal attack when I lived in his constituency. The local authorities didn't handle it very well. I had to move away because I was scared staying there and he refused to help me because I wasn't a constituent any longer. So I was surprised that he'd been such a hero that day.

FusionChefGeoff · 17/12/2020 07:06

I can't read the article behind the Telegraph pay wall but business events are allowed up to 30.

But without the details can't judge what spin the headline has put on it.

KeyboardWorriers · 17/12/2020 07:08

If it was work related I think it is allowed? we still didn't meet in person as we aren't insane but I believe it would have been legal for us to have had a team party

Redbrickwall · 17/12/2020 07:21

Well, I will remember this as I have to tell all 4 of my children that they aren’t allowed their birthday parties again.

inquietant · 17/12/2020 07:22

As Jim Royle would say: 'business meeting my arse!'

ramblingsonthego · 17/12/2020 07:30

He is my local mp and this doesn't surprise me at all. He comes across as all smug hero, but he is an absolute useless man. Always toes the party line, whenever you contact him you get a cut and paste answer that never answers the question properly. He is never out and about in his constituency, he is an out and out tory twat.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 17/12/2020 07:30

Maybe you could invite your boss and call them "business meetings". 😁

He has spoken in the commons several times recently saying we need to restrict who we see at Christmas and that people in his area need to work harder at not seeing people to change their tier.

It may have been a legal 'business meeting' but it's very stupid.

Loopyloui · 17/12/2020 08:06

He was on LBC or talk radio yesterday preaching how families should not spend it together blah blah blah . Honestly why do they all get away with it including that idiot in Scotland and they want the public to know beg the rules !

Havenly · 17/12/2020 08:21

@mrsnec

There is a strict parliamentary protocol that MPs can only act on behalf of their own constituents. Given the circumstances, one might think he would have explained this and helped to refer you to the relevant person. Or as you WERE his constituent at the time, you would think he could have helped.
mrsnec · 17/12/2020 08:30

@Havenly No this was not explained to me by him but was by the new MP who said he couldn't help because it didn't happen in his constituency. But there was no empathy at all from Elwood. I had family living in the area too and he couldn't guarentee their safety. I remember his office telling me there were more pressing matters and I looked into his biggest local issues at the time which appeared to be dog mess on the beach.

I think all politicians are a law unto themselves and have no faith in any of them. That day he helped that gentleman? He was just in the right place at the right time.

tinselearedcow · 17/12/2020 08:36

There is a little tric with the Tory graph site, if you refresh a couple of times as the page is loading it removes the pay wall!

"Tobias Ellwood has insisted he did not break tier restrictions after attending a 27-person function in London this week.

The Tory MP and chairman of the defence select committee was among the attendees at an event dubbed a “Christmas party” by the Iraq Britain Business Council.

Under London's Tier 3 restrictions, people must not meet anybody outside their household or support bubble in any indoor or outdoor setting, and the "rule of six" also applies.

Mr Ellwood has defended his attendance at the gathering by insisting it was a business function and therefore permitted under current restrictions.

He claimed the function at the Cavalry and Guards Club was described as a party in a “clerical area”.

He said: "It was a Covid-complaint event. We have troops out in Iraq, the security situation is deteriorating and I was invited.

"It was the wrong word. There was nothing Christmassy about it at all."

The reference to the gathering being a "Christmas party" has since been removed from the group's website."

Mr Ellwood said he gave a speech at the event, "spoke to a few people and then left".

tinselearedcow · 17/12/2020 08:37

Trick! The k on my keyboard eeps sticking!

countrygirl99 · 17/12/2020 08:43

"Business meeting" is standard cop out loop hole. But I'm sure there will be plenty of hypocrites giving him the benefit of the doubt will and then sucking their teeth at a people of to the sales in January!

tinselearedcow · 17/12/2020 08:43

Whoever wrote that article seems to have been at the Xmas sherry... it should be clerical error not area and covid compliant not complaint?

houseinthesnow · 17/12/2020 08:50

He should resign immediately.

Redbrickwall · 17/12/2020 09:51

@LivinLaVidaLoki
