My local hospital is overwhelmed

Local hospital has tonight said that is struggling with the number of covid 19 patients and is asking people to think carefully whether they actually need to go to hospital.

I'm so worried. Surely the Christmas mixing when we're already in trouble is going to be an absolute disaster?

The vaccine has been such good news yet it still feels like we've got so much further to go.

Not sure why I'm posting, just needed to vent

I am in North Wales our health board put out this message practically every week and our numbers are low. The staff absences are high at this time of year, poorly people so a shortage of beds, has been like this for years. Welsh NHS is struggling greatly.

WeirdWomble · 12/12/2020 22:42

@madcatladyforever shortly after I saw the post from the hospital I saw a post from our council about the vaccine. All the comments were people saying no way 😩

Yes the anti-vax comments on Torfaen and ABUHB pages are awful. I don't normally get involved on social media shit like that but I've found myself posting several times now to tell people to stop being so fucking stupid. Sharing screenshots of absolute wank that they've seen on YouTube or read on some backwards conspiracy website. Embarrassing. Even people I previously sent considered to be intelligent are genuinely questioning the "intention of the virus".

yellowmaoampinball · 12/12/2020 22:47

I can see how our local hospital/health board going the same way as Aneurin Bevan.

As an aside, I used to work for 111. They're part of the Ambulance service so they will never tell people to call an ambulance. Well, apart from the people who used to ring up demanding an ambulance but refusing any kind of assessment. If you get assessed as needing an ambulance they'll put you through.

EveLe · 12/12/2020 22:51

Saw this post earlier. I knew from NHS family members that it was getting bad locally, but if they’ve got no beds and queues of ambulances waiting that is scarily bad!

Had to go to RGH this week, and had to have my temp taken before I could even enter the building - is that normal now?

I've been told several times to call an ambulance. Although that might have been before we got 111 in Wales. Think it was NHS direct before?

That's the post I saw too @EveLe

Hi to all the Gwent people here Smile

The Grange also checks as does my GP although it takes ages and I find myself standing like an idiot in front of it for a while Grin

WeirdWomble · 12/12/2020 22:56

My GP surgery took temps at first but the last couple of times they haven't bothered.

Instead they ask if you're feeling well... no, I'm not feeling well or I wouldn't be here Hmm

It’s terrifying! Makes me wonder whether I should have missed my appointment - especially since they’ve now closed all clinics :(

I’m so relieved that we don’t have to send DC to school next week. There’s been several cases in both of my DCs schools. Not looking forward to blended learning again, but it feels like the safest option.

EveLe · 12/12/2020 23:03

Haven’t had it done at my GPs at all! Thought they may have checked when I went for flu jab, but nothing. So it seemed odd to me when they did it at RGH, but sounds like it’s routine at the moment.

wonkylegs · 12/12/2020 23:06

We got a message this week that my mums care home in Monmouthshire was stopping visits, due to the rising cases in the area. They haven't had a case but want to keep it that way. It's sad but I haven't been able to see her for ages as I live in tier 3 area in England (and we were tier 3 before last lockdown)
Thankfully mums dementia means she's not too bothered as she forgets I'm not visiting. I speak to her each week and send her care packages but it's not the same.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2020 23:09

Something on bbc news a few hours ago where Vaughan Gething had said there's potential to canc el it in Wales but they're worried they'll massively lose public trust

It’s quite desperate to watch how we’ve painted ourselves into this corner

housemdwaswrong · 12/12/2020 23:12

@londongirl12 yes, but usually they haven't already cancelled most things routine and still being overwhelmed.

DSV20 · 12/12/2020 23:12

18 ambulances queuing at the grange at the moment

WeirdWomble · 12/12/2020 23:14

I'm really glad our school closed on Friday too @EveLe I was considering keeping them off but pleased the decision was taken out of my hands.

It's all down to a dangerous combinations of lots of Covid + patients and low staffing levels due to illness/mental health/isolating. I work in A&E and it feels impossible to do my job at the minute. It's extremely frightening

ImAllOut · 12/12/2020 23:19

The NHS in Wales has been awful for a while now, this year has really not helped. I'm still waiting on a consultation after a referral in March 2019. I assume it will be 2 years+ by the time it rolls around.

Natsel84 · 12/12/2020 23:20

Yep south Wales here too , lost my dad to covid in October, he was in a side room on a non covid ward . If you live in south Wales you will know what hospital I'm in about as well .

MadameBlobby · 12/12/2020 23:20

I’m not worried, can’t do anything about it over and above what I am. Obviously hoping that me and mine won’t need medical care any time soon but that’s about it.

I'm so sorry to hear that Flowers Awful hospital, so many negative experiences.
MadameBlobby · 12/12/2020 23:23

They should scrap the Christmas easing. But they won’t and people will ignore it if they do

MadameBlobby · 12/12/2020 23:24

I feel so sorry for Wales, what a pigs ear that guy Drakeford has made of it all.
