How long did your results take with a private test?

Hi! I'm having a private test done, and I'm wondering if you've had a private test, how long did it take for you to get your results?
Thanks in advance!

Hi. I didn't have one but I had another vaccine done for work, privately. I saw that the private GP did covid tests and asked out of interest how long they took (because I was thinking when we next needed to isolate would it speed things up?)

I was told actually it would be a waste of time and they said don't bother and get an nhs test because they were coming back quicker at the moment. They said the private ones go to the same labs and aren't prioritised so it's completely pointless. She said people aren't bothering with them as much anymore as it's a waste of £149.

This was a couple weeks ago

My husband had a private one about six weeks ago and it took less than 24 hours.

I had one before travelling abroad last week. I took the test on Monday afternoon and had it back Wednesday morning.

We’re they encouraging this even if you don’t have symptoms? I really hope not.

My son had one a couple of weeks ago, it was posted to him on a Thursday, sent off same day and went to Northern Ireland, by tracked post. It got there next morning and result came through Saturday evening, so 2 days.

That is terrible advice OpheliasCrayon. The person giving that advice was seriously misinformed. The NHS test is not suitable for travel, and nobody should be abusing the service for that purpose. A Covid-19 PCR test result will be back within 24 -48 hours depending upon how and where the test was taken. A Covid antigen test will be back within hours.

I have presumed you meant for travel OP so apologies if that is not the case.

I don't understand what you're asking me sorry?

I don't think they were encouraging people to get a test with no symptoms...I'd just enquired how long it was if I needed a test at some point in the future. I didn't have symptoms- I was there for something else.

I asked because we'd had to get our DD2 tested a few weeks before and it got a bit stressful work wise waiting for the result so I'd just enquired for in future if we had symptoms and needed a quick result.

What? I'm so confused ;I wasn't travelling, it wasn't for travel!

Please see my above message -- I was just enquiring if they were coming back quicker than nhs ones, in the future event that one of my family had symptoms and we needed a test.

I was told there was no benefit getting a private one as they were currently coming back slower than the nhs ones. So... They said if in the future we had symptoms and needed a test in order to return to work or school, don't pay for private ones as it won't be quicker !

@OpheliasCrayon I think people are assuming OP needs one to travel which would make your advice irrelevant, but she hasn't actually said she needs it to travel so there was no issue with your comment as for all you knew OP does have symptoms.

Yeah I'm confused why people are having a go at me! there was no mention of travel!

Msmcc1212 · 11/12/2020 09:57

Ah. That’s alright then. Wasn’t having a go at you - honestly. Smile Just hoping that you were not being given advice to use an NHS test for personal reasons rather than following symptoms.

peppita · 11/12/2020 23:10

Thanks everyone!
It's for the Test to Release Scheme. I need to travel for work, and I'll be away for 8 days total. So would be tested on the 5th day - work is paying for this. And I'd need my results back before I fly, so was hoping they'd only take around 24-48 hours otherwise I don't think I'd be able to fly!

I had a Boots PCR Test this weekend. Results emailed to me just shy of 24 hours later.
