Can a one day fever be covid?

My son was told by school to self isolate on Friday, due to 2 cases in his form but he hadn’t been in close contact with either children. When I went to his bedroom to wake him and tell him, he complained of feeling a bit off. I checked his temp and it was 37.2. He’s 14.

For the rest of the day I checked his temp every hour, it fluctuated from 37.5 to 38.3 and he felt lethargic all day. His appetite was fine and he could taste fine. On Saturday, his temp was normal and he was back to his normal self. He does an occasional dry cough every few hours but it’s just more of a throat clearer than anything else.

My question is... can it be covid if the fever was only a day? I know it’s different with kids so that’s why I ask. Just FYI we did do a test but it was Thursday night and it was for the ONS study (happy coincidence as they’re only once a month) but the results could take up to 8 days to come back. We are all isolating this weekend but I don’t know whether to carry on isolating or not next week.

Thanks everyone.

38.3 is a temperature. Order him another test - it may have been too early to register on the test he did on Thursday. Keep isolating until you get the results back.

testingtesting321 · 22/11/2020 10:21

Yes, it can. I know of one man who had a fever for 2 hours, that was his only symptom, and he tested positive. So yes a fever for a day can certainly be covid. I would continue to isolate until you get the results back.

Seeline · 22/11/2020 10:23

I think you should get him tested, and all continue to isolate until you get the result.

He had a high temp and a cough and has been in close contact with a positive case. It seems quite likely to me.

SummerHouse · 22/11/2020 10:24

I would assume this is covid. And I would get him a test. And I would isolate the household unless the new test came back negative.

Yes. My friends little boy had a fever for an hour. Felt lethargic for the rest of the day. They tested him & covid. He was right as rain the next day & they said it was hell isolating for 14 days 🙈

gifeng · 22/11/2020 10:37

Yes of course, since coronavirus can even be completely asymptomatic.

AddictedToCrisps · 22/11/2020 10:47

Thanks everyone, I’ve ordered him a test for lunchtime today. I just needed confirmation that it could be covid so thanks. Hopefully it comes back quick and we can leave the house!!

We have had to get ds tested twice for single reading of 37.8 with no other symptoms at school. When I picked him shortly afterwards his temperature had dropped back to 37 but they said one reading was enough to require a test.

PuppyMonkey · 22/11/2020 11:26

DP only ever had a temp of 37.8 for a few hours, and it turned out he had it.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 22/11/2020 11:29

Don't forget that regardless of the test result, he still needs to self-isolate for the period of time indicated by school based on his contact with the positive case(s) to be sure he isn't incubating it.

movingonup20 · 22/11/2020 11:30

Yes! My fever last 2 hours. I lost taste and smell 3 days later

rc22 · 22/11/2020 12:03

Yes I had a fever for about an hour and a half and tested positive.

midnightstar66 · 22/11/2020 12:13

Yes, if he's had a temperature then book him a test. It could last any length of time.

PrivateD00r · 22/11/2020 12:17

Yes it definitely could be, I am glad you ordered a test because you need to know if you all need to isolate. Good luck Flowers

Well hats off to the test centres. Amazing service. Booked online at 10.30am, arrived at test centre for 12 noon, on our way home by 12.10. Fantastic and professional. So grateful to those who work there. Hopefully should get a result in less than 48hrs. Also, have just found out that a 3rd child has tested positive in his form today so it’s looking more likely. No one will leave our house now until the result. Thanks all.

Just had a call from the ons survey, the test he did on Thursday has come back POSITIVE. So we’re now isolating and waiting for our track and trace call. Bricking it now!!

I was quite ill with fever, cough, headache, tiredness, but it only lasted 2 days. Turned out that was covid..I figured not as..well it was so short, but it was according to a test. Was exactly like last time I had (proper) flu, but a LOT shorter.

testingtesting321 · 22/11/2020 16:45

Sorry to hear it was positive. I hope he is on the mend soon (although it sounds like he is probably fine already!). I hope the rest of the family stay well. I really hope school take this really seriously - how much of the bubble did they already send home? 4 positive cases in one class is really not good...

AddictedToCrisps · 22/11/2020 17:30

@testingtesting321 They sent his whole form home on Friday for isolation but there’s definitely 3 children who he mixes with who aren’t in his form. I’ll know more once I’ve spoken to school tomorrow morning.
