To not understand why people are looking forward to 2021

I was chatting to a friend yesterday about how rubbish lockdown is and we were saying how crap this year has been for both of us. We talked about it for a while and then she said, 'Bring on 2021!' I've had a few other people say things like 'I can't wait until this year is over' and 'I'll be glad to see the back of 2020'.

I don't get it - do they think the virus is just magically going to disappear at midnight 31st December?

I think the first few months of 2021 will be much of the same as now, but hopefully not the whole of the year.

Maybe just something like, 'I can't wait until this over' rather than implying things will automatically get better on 1st January, when we all know that's not true.

Some people are simply glass half-full 🙄. What's the alternative? To wallow in gloom and doom? Onwards and upwards I say!

I'm actually dreading 2021, because we will be putting our house on the market as we can no longer afford the mortgage due to Covid. But yes, onwards and upwards eh Hmm

No they think that as the vaccine is rolled out, COVID will have less and less impact on our lives, eventually getting us back to normality.

That doesn’t seem very difficult to understand, what are you struggling with?

I think by March-April, things will be pretty much back to normal. I am very excited about 2021. Lots of events and breaks away planned.

peasoup I'm sorry to hear that. 🌸. This year has been much harder on some than others and I can see why you are dreading losing your home. That's just awful.

But picking up on your friend's expression is just daft. She wouldn't have meant anything by it and surely not personally.

No, obviously not. Its just an expression. Next year wont be as bad as this year, and the new year is the beginning of this. Yes it might be a few months still but theres positives on the horizon

Im sorry things have been hard on you, but equally people are allowed to be positive about the future. Some people are optimists and thats fine

Some people are just optimistic, positive and view life in that way. They don't believe it's going to end at midnight on NYE but it's reasonable to assume that the end is in sight. The desire of some people for everyone to be in despair and sack cloth and ashes is really bizarre.

I don’t think they are implying things will be better. I think you are misreading something into it and getting annoyed by it. Nobody thinks things will be magically better on 1st January.

I don't think people saying they're looking forward to 2021 are thinking it will disappear on NYE. But it's more the thought that at some point in 2021 we have a good chance of being back to normal as more and more people get the vaccine. Plus I'm looking forward to spring/summer even if we are still in a lockdown.

It's just an expression, a hope. I wouldn't take it literally.

I don't think 2021 is going to be the rapid bounce back some seem to be anticipating, but I do feel hopeful it'll be better than 2020!

We've also had some shit impacts from the virus, I understand why you feel gloomy about having to sell your house Flowers.

The economic picture is not going to be pretty next year with accompanying issues such as relationship breakdown, mental ill health and homelessness Sad

No I don't think it will magically disappear.

Do I want 2020 over? Yes
Do I think 2021 will be better? yes

This year has brought 3 close family deaths.
I have barely seen my family other than for funerals and deaths.
I have been off work for 6 weeks due to Covid complications.
I worked from home setting remote learning for several months.

2021 has to be better than this.

Because it's been a crap year? 2021 has lots of posirived already. :) It doesn't have to be normal, just not as crap as 2020!

No, but 2021 is a whole 12 months so there is time for things to improve. Some people need something to focus on, I can't wait for 2021. Do I magically expect no more coronavirus my 1st Jan? Of course not. But by Spring time things should look a lot more positive.

It's just a bit of a saying.
Nobody expects that covid will just die out at 00.00.01 of 01/01/21
It probably started in 2019 anyway.
But 2021 is the future, and at some point in the future, we'll be back to some kind of normality.

Roll on 2021 I say because Spring and Summer is something to look forward to even if covid is still around.. the numbers will likely naturally fall again and therefore the tiers for most places will be lowered as the NHS wont be struggling as much as it is combined with all the normal winter illnesses combined with covid admissions.

I don't understand how you know for certain that next year won't be as bad as this year. What if the vaccine doesn't work or isn't effective? The flu jab for example only reduces the risk of catching flu by 40-60% - it's certainly not anywhere near 100% effective.
