V MILD loss of taste??

Three times today I've eaten something, expecting it to taste delicious, and it's been v bland. Like, could only taste sweetness when eating honey on toast, no taste of the toast at all. Then pasta with anchovies tasted tomatoey and salty, but no other flavours, and now I'm eating a pastry made with Pandan, a delicious chinese flavour, but it is indistinguishable. Just sweetness.

I feel 100% well, have walked 12000 steps today, don't feel tired, no fever, feel great actually!

Should I be worried? Should I get tested?! I feel v silly but it's just all a bit weird!

I believe it is loss or change in taste and/or smell. So yes, you need to get a test. Hope you continue to feel well and it is negative.

ThatDamnScientist · 11/11/2020 17:10

Actually just double checked and it does include a change not just loss of either sense. So yes to test.

SpaceOP · 11/11/2020 17:15

Yup, you need to get a test.

I think losing your sense of taste and smell doesn't necessarily mean it's gone completely. eg when it happened to me, I could still taste that I was drinking wine, but couldn't properly taste it. And yes could tell it was sweet or whatever but not really the nuanced. I would definitely get a test asap.

SpaceOP · 11/11/2020 17:16

Also, you don' need to be worried. But what you do need to be doing is avoiding giving it to anyone else. You're probably suffering from a mild case. But if you pass it pn, someone down the line may get it significantly worse.

BurningRose · 11/11/2020 17:18

Yep it's quite likely you have it. I had same symptoms and loss of smell too. Try and smell something strong OP. Can you smell it?

cordiality · 11/11/2020 17:20

Thanks for the replies. This sounds pretty damning. I just went and smelled the jar of Earl grey teabags, a smell I usually love. It smells wrong, kinda tea like, kinda detergents, not right at all.

Will book a test now. I'm feeling slightly panicky. Deep breaths.

Ok, test booked, 7.30pm tonight!!
Can my kids go to school tomorrow? Can my husband go to work?
What a mess. Sad

Hope test goes ok.

And yes your whole family have to isolate.

You for 10 days as you are symptomatic

Others for 14 days.

If you get a negative test you all leave isolation.

If you are positive they remain in isolation until day 14.

If in that time any family members develop symptoms they isolate for 10 days from that point and get a test ASAP.

HarrietOh · 11/11/2020 17:49

Not if you have symptoms, everyone needs to isolate.

cordiality · 11/11/2020 18:16

Thanks all, yes am thinking more clearly now, of course we have to stay home. One child is devastated to miss school, the other is delighted!
I'll post the result of the test on here when I get it...

I had the same and it turned out to be negative so don't be too concerned just yet. Hopefully your test will be negative too.

inthedarkxx · 11/11/2020 19:34

Same happened to me and my test was postive. I still can't taste or smell 10 days later

GreatSoprendo · 11/11/2020 22:13

I’m in the exact same boat - I haven’t completely lost taste, and smell but everything is kind of bland and faint, and have not started with a bit of a tickly cough. Been for a test tonight, and keeping DC off school until I get a result.

Can I ask @cordiality what you are doing about isolating from household members and DC? I’m in bedroom and have moved work kit in here so can work/eat/sleep in here until results, leaving DC with DP. Is that overkill?

cordiality · 11/11/2020 22:53

I just have no idea what to do @GreatSoprendo! Kids and my DH will be working/schooling at home, but DH cannot easily take the day off work to look after the kids, especially if I'm home and well, so distancing from the kids will be impossible! And if I'm not distanced from the kids, is there any point distancing from him??
What you're doing I think is 100% the advised thing to do, but we're gonna have to go with the 'if one of us gets it, we all get it' school. I can't see that we have a choice!

DH has actually gone off to sleep in a different room tho. He was weirdly keen to do that Grin. I feel completely completely fine, and even could taste my dinner pretty well, so am hoping for tests back and back to real life ASAP

Fingers crossed! I had a (negative) test about a month ago and got the results 18 hours after the test so hoping this time is as quick.
DP has a day full of online meetings tomorrow and I'm staying in the bedroom..Suspect DS will spend most of his day on the landing chatting to me from a distance(ish). I'm trying to stay in but had to go downstairs to feed the cat as it would starve otherwise!

cordiality · 13/11/2020 11:30

Just to let you know, I have had my test result back and it is negative! Hooray! Back to school and work for all of us. Thanks so much for all your advice, I'm glad I did it.
