Can COVID mess with periods?

My period was due today, nothing.
No cramps, no spotting, mild PMT and I'm ravenous (have been for the past week) dizzy on and off, fatigue cripplingly so (as in falling asleep at work, in the car when parked etc) and this vile metallic taste in my mouth that's making everything taste off.

Taken pregnancy test also resounding negative (phew!) (we use barrier contraception and have had no known slip ups)

Due to the taste thing I've been advised to isolate abs take a Covid test which is fine, I'm due one anyway for work (patient facing)

I was wondering if the two were linked possibly? Could I have Covid and it's caused my period to be late/missed? Is that a thing? I'm not stressing about it so I don't think it's the worry and stress that have delayed it.

I feel otherwise alright generally, spells of feeling like someone's pulled the plug on me energy wise and sudden but no fever, or cough.

I know my Covid test will be back in a couple days but thought I'd ask around if anyone's experienced this.

Yes it can. There was a post on here a couple of days ago about it. I've had covid and it didn't mess with my period but I did have other symptoms you describe

I always thought that being ill or stressed can delay periods, so I guess it's possible?

I'll have to have a look for it thanks.

I haven't seen anything official, but there were plenty of reports here in the first wave about menstrual disturbances with covid.

(It isn't one of the symptoms in the Zoe app. Cynically, I suspect this demonstrates a blind spot!)

In general, any physical or psychological stress can mess with your cycle. Also, if you happened to lose significant weight while unwell, that could have had an impact.

I had bad flu in Feb 2019 and missed 3 cycles - and I am usually like clockwork!

Don't worry, I'm sure it will come back! Smile

Funny that. I’ve had two almost non existent periods and now I appear to be having one a week early. No idea how this one will play out. Not pregnant either. Had a Covid test which was negative for symptoms two months ago.

I’d be interested to know what your result is please which is why I’ve posted really.

I have had the same with it recently, they were all out of whack, only the recent one was more normal. Hope that it's resolved now! Cough still slightly there after 3 months :/ not scared though. Just annoyed.

Period hit today (like a vice crushing my pelvis - fun!) still have odd sense of taste and general dizziness.
I will report back with the result of the Covid test.

Well that’s odd but I hope you are feeling better and thanks for the update. Mine is also a ranging one which is making up for the last two bogus ones!

I could have written this post. I also took two pregnancy tests even though I knew odds of being pregnant were slim to none. My last period was due 19th Oct (I'm usually regular as clockwork) and I tested positive for Covid on the 24th Oct.
Period has only just finally arrived today on 14th Nov so 26 days late. My cycle is 25 days so I've basically completly skipped one period completely, which has never happened before.

Scootingthebreeze · 15/11/2020 00:37

When I had covid my normally 4 day long period lasted 10 days. I typically have a heavy flow for 1.5 days and lighter the other days. During covid it was a steady, but not heavy flow for most of it and about 4 days of light flow

Nasty viruses can throw things, yes. The one time I've ever been significantly late and not pregnant was the time I was due on after having strep throat and 10 days of antibiotics. I've never felt so ill in my life and ended up being 10 days late (which made it then coincide with my long weekend in the lakes ffs!!!!) but yes it can absolutely throw things.
