Self isolation after travel questions

I am due to travel abroad with work and the government says I need to self isolate for a fortnight on my return.

The country I’m visiting has much lower rates of Covid than us so why is this?

It can’t simply be because I’ll have been on the plane, as there are many countries with exemptions. You can fly in from them with no isolation.

Are there teams that check travellers are isolating? Have people been fined?

I feel that my risk of Covid is much higher just going about my business in this country!

To be clear, I have no intention of breaking the rules, but if I understood the reasoning, I might feel happier about it!

I don’t think it’s about whether or not the rates are higher than the UK, just about the likelihood that you’ll bring it back and add to the numbers in the UK. You may be more likely to catch it going about your business here, but they can’t ask everyone to self isolate for two weeks every time they go outside.

OH had to self isolate for 2 weeks. You have to complete a passenger locator form up to 48 hours before departure so they can trace You on return to uk. You have to give address and contact details. OH was stuck at home (fortunately we have garden) no one called to check on him. I don't think they have the resources. Bizarrely I could come and go from house so I had to run a lot of errands for him!

i agree OP it seems ridiculous. I could almost understand it over the summer when we got our levels right down; but now when they're much, much higher in many locations in the UK than some of the locations on the quarantine list?! It seems bizarre.

We travelled and had to quarantine in the summer, my DH got one phonecall asking if he knew he was supposed to self isolate and that was it.

Urgh! Well, at least I’m not the only one who thinks it’s absolute nonsense. They want to put huge restrictions on our lives (according to the website I should even stay away from my husband and children!), with no sensible argument why.
