I've always felt a little sorry for Melania. Here she was, thinking she was signing up to be simply the trophy wife of some billionaire she could presumably eventually divorce, and then she ends up the first lady of the United States. It's nuts. I bet she never wanted this life or could have seen it coming in her wildest dreams. I find it a little bit comical and feel some empathy for her.
I was just thinking this morning how ridiculous it is that the US president's spouse is expected to be performatively domestic, the ultimate wholesome wife and mother. Of course, I'd much rather it be someone off kicking ass and taking names in her own worthwhile career (and I'd
infinitely prefer it be Bill Clinton) but there is a level on which I sympathise with the idea that the role she's expected to fulfill is, to put it mildly, quite problematic.
I remember being quite entertained, at the time the wotsit was elected, by the knots his supporters had to tie themselves into over how very classy and elegant she was, actually, and how it wasn't a problem at all that she used to get her boobs out for the camera; and the rest of us didn't care in the slightest because that's a living, just like any other, and so what?
She herself is an appalling human being, though, so I find it hard to muster any sympathy for her personally.
