Was trying to watch the Boris waffle while working and half heard something about military back up in areas without enough police to enforce new sanctions.

Can anyone clarify exactly what was said please?

I think we will need to wait for document. Also didn't catch exactly what he said about indoor sports. Is that jyst team sports or all sports. Eg gymnastics

Mintjulia · 22/09/2020 13:48

That they will be available to backfill for the police is needed. Not sure what for Sad

ChaChaCha2012 · 22/09/2020 13:51

It was an inadvertent admission that police numbers have been cut by 20,000 since 2010, and there's no way they can enforce the measures to any meaningful extent.

From the way he said it, it is up to local police forces to decide if they wish to call them in. I expect most will see it as counterproductive and choose not to.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 22/09/2020 13:55

Hopefully it was just a bit of sabre rattling to emphasise how serious this is and get people to believe these measures will be enforced.

EweSurname · 22/09/2020 13:56

"We will provide the police and local authorities with the extra funding they need, a greater police presence on our streets, and the option to draw on military support where required to free up the police."

I was talking to someone in China the other day and he actually sounded kind of smug about having 'strong government' that can actually close things down so the virus is better contained.

Scary days.

UnaMujer · 22/09/2020 14:11

What does “military support” mean, was that his way of telling us there will be military on our streets?

SheepandCow · 22/09/2020 14:25

The military often help out (in a non enforcement way) in times of crisis, i.e. food distribution to flood hit areas.

Can't remember if it was here or another European country but the military were definitely helping with testing during the first wave.

The police are under-resourced and potentially many officers will be off sick with Covid over the coming months.
So yes we might need the military to help protect us against both Covid and crime.

Funkypolar · 22/09/2020 14:31

As long as they don’t start shooting civilians. That worked really well in Northern Ireland.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/09/2020 14:32

Yes it was! He said, as per the quote ^^, that the military would be available to support police if needed.

So, in those places where people, young or old, black, white, abe bodied or otherwise, insist on congregating, flouting new laws, guidance, police instructions etc, there could be a military presence.

It isn't that hard to understand that this is the very natural, utterly foreseeable consequences of the behaviour of those who choose to do as they choose, as and when, regardless.

Tough shit!

It's just more if the crap well all need to unravel once covid is not such a threat. Crap we wouldn't have needed to deal with if all the hug my parents, grandkids, don't blame the young, the old, BAME, Extinction Rebellion, sun seekers and generally selfish twats had taken time to have a first, let alone second thought about their actions.

Tis all the fault of us, people. From the very first infection in the world to whatever has been and comes next.

Get a grip. Stop whimpering about being fair. Do what you have to and work through the bits that hurt.

And yes, I am pissed off, at the end of all sympathy and empathy for the generic whimpering of people who could do better but choose not to cos they are somehow different, special!

Funkypolar · 22/09/2020 14:33

CuriousaboutSamphire - you okay hun?

ComDummings · 22/09/2020 14:34

The beginning of the police state.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/09/2020 14:47

@Funky... I've only response to shite like that... And the ooh police state crap that followed.

No. I'm not alright, nor am I your fucking hun!

I am annoyed and frustrated at the mindless, selfish fuckwittery we see enacted daily.

I am more frustrated and angry at the conspiracy theory spouting bollocks.

If people mouthing their favourite tripe de hour and actually doing nothing!

If nothing else it distracts from the help needed by those who really are in need, who do need to be seen and heard and helped.

Selfish and stupid.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/09/2020 14:55

The beginning of the police state.

That would be daft, we don’t have ID cards, you cannot have a police state without compulsory ID.

This is exactly what the government want you to think. Division and blame.

Not sure why being BAME makes it into your list. Care to explain?

NotAKaren · 22/09/2020 14:56

What happened to Covid Marshalls Hmm

PicsInRed · 22/09/2020 14:58

The military will be used to guard strategic civil infrastructure such as supermarkets, petrol stations, hospitals etc.

Police will do the arresting.

Funkypolar · 22/09/2020 14:59

CuriousaboutSamphire - nasty piece of work that you are. Suggest you relax, your blood pressure must be sky high!

SquirrelScorn · 22/09/2020 15:01

There was a military run test centre near me during the first wave. I assume it will be more of that sort of thing

SquirrelScorn · 22/09/2020 15:02

@CuriousaboutSamphire it’s very hard to work out what your point may be. Your posts are just incoherent rage.

loulouljh · 22/09/2020 15:04

I didn't think we had any military left??!! It will probably be a few cadets! along with the marshalls!!! Think BJ knows he has lost all credibility so is now threatening the big guns!! How we all laughed...

BAME? Do you mean BLM or are you blaming BAME people for coronavirus?
PinkMacaron · 22/09/2020 16:03

He said that there's going to be a large military parade in Whitehall on a weekly basis, televised, to increase public morale. There'll be marching, military bands. They'll get the nukes out for show, tanks, etc. Boris will stand on the balcony to review all this and to take the salute.

OldQueen1969 · 22/09/2020 16:11

Grin @PinkMacaron

Honestly I didn't mean to start a bunfight - and thanks to all for clearing that up for me ...... just found a bit on the Guardian live-feed about that too...... mostly logistical but with the potential for enforcement if absolutely necessary but the police are jittery about that bit seems to be the thrust if it, like before.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/09/2020 16:14

I meant BAME, just as I meant white, young, old etc. As in EVERYONE! All PEOPLE!

Such desperate reaching for racism there! Get a grip.

It's a manmade/ caused disease, spread by the actions of all mankind, minus those on antarctica, it seems.

And yes, an angry rant. Why not?
