Child came back from first week of school Unwell - just a cold?

DS who is only in nursery had his first week last week

On Friday he was snotty and sneezy, no temperature.
By Sunday he was fine.

We are not. We are full of snot, headaches, achy body, sore throat but no temperature

Because there’s no temperature or cough I am assuming he’s just bought a cold home that we have got the brunt of?

Sounds like just a cold to me. I had one last week.

I've just made a list about this cold and sore throat bug. It has done the rounds at my sons high school and every kid has had it pretty much.
Varying degrees of how bad they have it

Sounds like a cold. Loads of bugs going around at the moment.

It could be covid of course, no one here has any special diagnostic powers.

But statistically it is likely to be a cold, and no one (yet) has a testable symptom.

So the system (rightly or wrongly) says you can continue as if it were a cold.

Get well soon!

My one son is back from secondary with a cold. Lots doing the rounds right now

If 3% tests for covid come back positive, you could roughly assume you've a one in thirty chance of a 'cold' being covid. I mean that's very rough, but people need to stop assuming it is covid and stop assuming it isn't covid.

It could be but statistically is (much?) more likely not to be.

Porcupineinwaiting · 21/09/2020 08:16

It is really very unusual for an adult to get symptomatic COVID without getting either a temperature, a cough or loss of smell/taste. So almost certainly a cold, yes (I mean if you knew there's been a mass outbreak of COVID at the nursery I'd be a bit more cautious but other and that I'd not worry).

Is it? I understood the whole problem was many people got headache/fatigue but no testable symptoms.
Porcupineinwaiting · 21/09/2020 08:26

That's what the data shows. Obviously it is quite self selecting - if only people with the 3 main symptoms can get tested then everybody who's positive will of course have one of the 3 main symptoms. My understanding was though that, although you might start with headaches/fatigue you generally go on to develop one or more of the other symptoms. I started with chills, nausea, sore throat and diarrhea, the cough didn't show up til day 6 but it did come.

Rebelwithallthecause · 21/09/2020 08:56

@Porcupineinwaiting oh that sounds worrying

I assumed the cough and temperature would hit first

How do you feel now?

Now I'm fine thanks, although it took a while to get here. I had longtail covid though, most people are better within a couple of weeks.

Update - I’m still a bit snotty but on the mend

DH on the other hand came home from work early. Now has a temperature, new cough and his taste and smell has reduced (not gone) but he is still snotty.
He’s very achy and sore and fatigued and had stomach ache.

He still thinks it’s just a bad cold that’s affected him worse than the rest of us

I’ve tried to book a test through the government website for him - none available .

Typically

Really hoping it’s not Covid as we’ve visited grandparents over the weekend

It could be a cold but I'd keep trying for a test if I was you. Try at 8pm, I've heard new batches of test slots are released then.
