So I’m freaking the fuck out.
Have had temp for the last four days. Blocked ears and nose. No cough. We all thought it was a crappy cold until yesterday when smell and taste disappeared. It’s horrible and I feel so anxious that they’ll never come back. What were your experiences with anosmia, and is there anything I can do? I’m so worried.

I haven't, but I know people who have and in both of those cases they took a long time to come back.

I lost my taste and smell, only lasted 4-5 days and then came back as normal. Literally had no other symptoms. Makes eating fucking boring but I was lucky!

CrackersDontMatter · 19/09/2020 18:48

I lost mine. It was the strangest sensation. It came back gradually after about two weeks. It's not 100% but it doesn't really cause a problem. Certain things taste or smell different. My dad's is still not great months later but he was a lot sicker than I was. Most people I know who have had it have had a full return to normal.

CrackersDontMatter · 19/09/2020 18:49

Sorry, it's still not 100%

Stringervest · 19/09/2020 18:51

DH lost his for a week in January with no other symptoms at the same time as I had a dreadful dry cough and DD had a fever and breathing problems. He was freaking out as he didn't know what it could be. No one knew it was a covid symptom back then.

He got it back after a week. No idea if it was covid, though. We'll never know.

I hope you're ok OP! I honestly loose my sense of smell and taste whenever I have a cold... literally every single time so it's going to be a long winter for me I think 😬 It's one of the most frustrating feelings isn't it because when you're unwell taste is a great comfort!
Have you arranged a test? I hope you're through the worst of it 😂

Please ignore the laughing emoji!!!!! It was supposed to be a heart ❤️

Much better today, thank you. Just super-stressed and tearful about loss of smell/taste. I have humongous health anxiety at the best of times and this is a fucking nightmare. Thank you to everyone who has posted.

No testing by me, btw. Gave up a couple of days ago. Even my GP told me not to bother. The system is clusterfucked.

I lost my sense of smell back beginning of the lockdown before it was a confirmed symptom. I remember rubbing vicks onto ds and thinking it must be out of date as it had no smell. Very strange, it had a novelty effect for a week or two then I started to get sad about the fact I couldn’t smell my youngest dc ( not the teenage boys, having no smell was a blessing with them at times) Smell has returned fully, I can’t remember how long it took maybe a couple weeks or a bit longer.

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 19/09/2020 19:09

I also had no sense of smell. Mine still hasn’t come back properly (from April!). I was previously like a bloodhound now I can’t smell everything that I used to 😕

AlandAnna · 19/09/2020 19:10

My husband did. It came back after about 3 weeks. Most people that I have spoken to had it return quickly enough Flowers

Kitcat122 · 19/09/2020 19:11

I lost my smell with Covid. Could not smell a thing but had no blocked nose. It came back intermittently which was odd so I couldn't trust my sense of smell for about 2 months. I had thought my fabric softener was rubbish as couldn't smell my washing 😂

Saffzy · 19/09/2020 19:13

I’ve lost mine! Sounds weird but I didn’t notice for a few days. It’s been about 4 days now. It’s such a weird feeling.

Yankathebear · 19/09/2020 19:14

I didn’t lose my sense of smell but some smells have changed. Meat smells like cheese on toast which is rubbish as a vegetarian when Dh is cooking steak etc. This has been since March.
Luckily I love cheese on toast but I keep being disappointed!

TolstoyAteMyHamster · 19/09/2020 19:18

Smell and taste vanished half way through a meal. It was most odd. I’d had the cough and fever for four days at that point, plus breathlessness and fatigue. The fever went after that, and the other symptoms persisted for a few weeks. Smell/taste was the last to come back apart from random moments of tiredness.

I assume it was Covid. I’d had contact with a confirmed case and people around me were going down like skittles back in March.

Inkpaperstars · 19/09/2020 19:26

I may have had it back in April, I lost my sense of smell (and taste partially) but I did not have a blocked nose. If your nose is still blocked that may explain the loss of sense of smell, it may not be covid. Is the loss absolutely total? I got DP to hold things under my nose that were very strong smelling, but sometimes there was nothing there....I couldn't smell anything or even tell if any item was there or not. Whatever I tried to smell, there was nothing.

Sorry to say for me it has not been a great recovery, still can't smell many things at all and what I can smell is either horrible smelling and not as it should be, or very faint. I still hold out hope though. Rest assured that many have had a recovery of their sense of smell, and in your case it may not even be Covid.

rosina38 · 14/10/2020 21:59

Sorry hopping on now as totally fed up now it's been 7 months where my sense of smell has been affected. I've not been able to smell my newborn 😭 and the things I can smell don't smell as they should. Just needed a rant :(
