Change in taste but no loss of smell

Has anyone else had this? Does loss of taste and smell tend to go together or can you have one without the other?

Just had a yoghurt which is usually really strong tasting, but I could barely taste it at all. I can still smell fine.

A lot of people I have spoken to with Covid-19 say that their food doesn't taste right even without loss of smell, this is of course just my anecdata.

AliciaWhiskers · 15/09/2020 20:43

Hmmm. Not what I wanted to hear Confused

Have you spoken to many people with COVID?

DS has a sore throat and snotty nose also starting today. No other symptoms though.

Sorry @Northernsoullover I reread that message and it didn’t come out how I intended it to at all!

I’m using it as an excellent excuse to eat ice cream, just to test if I can taste it

I get that all the time with colds. Has this never happened to you before?

WildWaterSwimmer · 15/09/2020 21:49

The Covid symptoms guidance on the NHS website says loss of taste OR smell. I think you should get tested.

Oly4 · 15/09/2020 21:50

It’s loss of taste or smell that can be a symptom of Covid.
I’d try to book a test

AliciaWhiskers · 15/09/2020 21:53

@PremierInn yes, but when I have a cold and a blocked nose. I don’t have a cold or a blocked nose. Just an odd sense that things don’t taste right.

A friend's first symptom was a loss but not a total loss of taste.

He thought his beer had gone off!

Porcupineinwaiting · 15/09/2020 22:49

I had COVID without a loss of smell or taste but my sense of taste was distorted- stuff tasted bad or bland for the first week. Not that I was eating much tbh.

I get that quite often as my only sign or first sign I am coming down with something, not when I have a blocked nose
I guess if you do a test and its negative then you'll know that you do too
