Theres a few threads saying their dc have cold symptoms, runny nose, sore throat......not covid symptoms. Just wondering what the school stance has been regarding the symptoms?

A few dc in my DS class were ill over the weekend with similar type symptoms all had covid tests, all negative, all back in school now. However the school have been pretty insistent that a child can only return now with a negative test result, now theres a serious problem even getting a test and can only be if 1 of the 3 main covid symptoms are showing, were do we stand with schools that are saying to keep children off showing normal cold symptoms?
When should we and shouldn't we be keeping dc off? And what should the criteria be to return if off for reasons other than covid symptoms?
Theres children near me been told to stay home with a sore throat.
