Daughter’s first day at back at secondary school

The First thing they did was all 300 children in the hall for an assembly to talk about the new rules because of Covid. the desks were the same as they were before some facing each other, very cramped hall ways, no social distancing, luckily my family are all pretty healthy but I give the school 2 weeks until a year group is sent home because of infections

Not all secondary schools are like this.

In my ds school they're kept in groups of 30 at all times apart from lunch when they are allowed in their year group.

They only move out of their designated classroom when essential, for example to move to a science lab. He said at no time do they cross paths with any other group in the corridors and they are wearing masks to move around even within their group.

Teachers and pupils are allowed to wear PPE if they choose.

He said it's all been really calm.

Sounds like a year group bubble- just like the government guidelines.
What would you like to change?

It's crazy how different schools are. The secondary next to me has installed thermal imaging cameras, all doors are touch free now and is fogging the classrooms!

It is isn't it. I'm actually highly impressed with the way ds school has dealt with this.

He's also told me that the teacher has a zone around their desk which no one is allowed to cross and if they come out of their zone to help students they wear their PPE.

It's never going to be 100% but it's a far cry from the scaremongering photographs of crowded corridors.

It doesn’t bother me, I don’t know what else the school can do as it’s probably over crowded by about 300 children before Covid but if there is an infection, the school year groups will be sent home every 5 minutes.

Our school does not hold assemblies.
They didn't have to cram them all in, in one go. Senseless. Also immediately undermines, the whole sd thing.

There is no social distancing in schools. Where can we put them?

My DDs school is having assemblies.. virtually. Camera in every classroom, projected on the screen in each room. The kids think it's great.

I don't know where you are, but I'm in Scotland and the schools have been back since mid August. There's 1500 kids at our high school and 1 has tested positive for Covid and she's absolutely fine. The school and education authority were great, effectively contact tracing, and neither the class nor the year group was sent home. The school is spotlessly clean, staff are enforcing the guidelines really well. I don't know anyone who is worried about infection risk in schools here.

South East, we’re not in a high infection area so hopefully we will be ok. My daughter really enjoyed being back in school so I’m hoping they’re not sent home.

Rockin I'm in Scotland and I would agree the schools have implemented a lot of safety precautions here, lots of cleaning etc.
I'm still worried every day, not that my pupils would realise as I don't show it.

If only that was us! A week after opening and 24 schools at least in Birmingham area have had to send students/staff home due to confirmed case/s.
