Cancellation of Armistice Parades

Our local paper is carrying the news that all local commemorations are cancelled. The decision was made by The British Legion.

It's emerged today that there will be no poppy sellers in the streets in the lead up either, so they are going to lose a lot of money. It's been questioned but it's not allowed even if they wear masks.

There's been a bit of upset in the local forums but most people understand. It takes a lot of organising so the decision had to be made now. A few have said they'll go to the memorials anyway.

Pantos have been cancelled, schools say they may not be able to open fully, visitor attractions demand pre-booking and are only partially open, weddings and funerals still limited in numbers for the foreseeable future.

We are miles and miles away from being "back to normal". And we'll stay that way until people are serious about preventing the spread of infection. It's so dispiriting to see the advice being ignored.

At this rate it won't be over by next Christmas.

That's obviously the Legion's decision. There's no law that says you can't stand outside with a mask on! I guess most of their volunteers are in the older age range.

That was my feeling. I think it was probably the right decision but there are grumblings from some of the elderly. I don't see how there could be a march and a service, certainly.

Yes it is dispiriting.

Who said it was gonna be over by Christmas?

wait...

latticechaos · 18/08/2020 17:15

Well that is sad. Don't see what else the Legion could have done because so many sellers are older.

It's going to be a very odd, sad year.

They were cancelled a while ago weren’t they?

OddBoots · 18/08/2020 17:28

Hopefully people will visit and buy from the poppy shop online instead.

It's only just hit our local papers. We aren't the most up with the news village. :)
