Anyone with a reception starter wishing they’d delayed?

My DC is summer born and being assessed for autism (has a bit of speech delay etc as well) went through the motions of considering delaying reception until next year but ultimately decided to send him this year.

However if starting is going to be delayed, if the school is then potentially going to keep shutting down Etc and the potential social distancing and things get even stricter, I’m panicking that I’ve not made the right choice.

I guess I’m worried he will miss a load of school and not really get the most from reception then bam be in year one where it’s a lot more serious and work-orientated. But then I know it’s the same for all the children and hopefully this will be taken into account.

Such a confusing and worrying time.

I think if he has some speech delay or other issues school is the best place for him to be even if it does end up being on and off. All the children are of the same disadvantage of missing the last few months of education and potentially having interuppted education next this year. Schools will accommodate this, for example my youngest is going into y1 in September they are continuing with the EYFS curriculum to start with before they start key stage 1.

I think it might help you to go through so the reasons you decided not to apply to defer in the first place, you must have had valid reasons that are still relevant?

There's no deadline for delaying entry, so if you do change your mind you can still delay, but obviously the sooner the better.

We have delayed our 3 year old summer born and was granted permission for a reception start next Sept.

My dd is not summer born and has speech delay and is selective mute.
I really wished I kept her at her nursery but the school she is going to is very well sort after so was afraid she wouldn't get a space.
