Quarantine right now! No, wait until I've come back from holiday.

When the subject of quaranting after holidays first came up, so many peolle complained about why it wasn't introduced immediately.

Now a change in infection rates has happened and the government has reacted immediately, the cry is you can't do that, my holiday is being ruined or why should I be quarantined, I am being inconvenienced!

Have people forgotten how COVID got a grip in the UK? From those returning from half term and school trip holidays in Italy!

Talking about learning lessons, how about that one.

Finally, not going on holiday doesn't kill anyone. Catching and spreading COVID to others just might do so.

I know it's not AIBU but YANBU.

People going on holiday during a pandemic isn't one of the best ideas and I know people will say they had no choice as they'd lose the money they've spent but that money has gone anyway. I couldn't imagine going abroad and having to wear a mask in the stifling heat as a choice.

I'm all for the government taking responsibility for the citizens of that country but as a person you have to take your own responsibilities for yourself and your family - including going/not going on holiday and suck up any consequences of that decision knowing there's a world wide pandemic happening.

I love travelling and visiting new places. Despite that, I still think that sadly closing borders and quarantine on arrival are some of the most effective measures in containing a global pandemic. It is an awful situation for the travel industry, which is a big contributor to the global economy and to cultural awareness, but not travelling really does help contain the virus.

It was being contained in Europe until the hordes starting flying and traveling all over the place for their summer holidays. What happened to staycations?

Totally agree with you

SquishySquirmy · 27/07/2020 20:03

Are you certain that the people who were demanding "quarantine NOW" are the same ones complaining about being quarantined after their holiday in Spain?
Because I think there is little overlap between the two groups.
The public is not a one minded blob with a shared point of view on all things.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/07/2020 20:18

I disagree with going on holiday anywhere abroad

BUT Spain is not more infectious than here so it's utterly ham fisted and useless

I agree with your last comment. However, from the media reporting, for example BBC and Channel 4 News, that is how it's often portrayed.

With there need to make headlines and to sensationalise things, they often overlook pertinent points. Such as asking those they interviewed on holiday or returning to the UK,

You know that we are still in a global pandemic situation, the government has warned that travel restrictions can be reimposed at any time, so what preparations or contigency plans did you have in place for such an eventuality?

No instead it was the inane questions, of how do you feel? How cross are you? Plus the media view of, shame, the government has moved the goal posts, it is not being consistent. Why is it not consistent by saying if x happens y will happen and actually following through?

No it's government that should do take responibility for their actions, not the individual. That then gives licence for the, it's not fair cries. Other people can quarantine, not me!

I despair at times. 😐

It is. The rate of infection per 100,000 is over twice what it is here.

Yes and they're testing less than the UK, with a higher proportion of positive tests so likely to miss more.

I think the government did the right thing. I don't actually support them generally, at all in fact, but I think that half the country will outcry whatever they do. Their key role is to protect jobs and keep people here safe.
