Kids and masks in hairdressers

I have a very petite 4 year old who badly needs a haircut, does anyone know if masks are mandatory for kids in hairdressers?
I’m not sure I could find one small enough even if he was willing to wear it.
I can’t seem to find any definitive answers online.

I think children under 4 don't have to wear them, 4 and over do. Then it's down to the individual salon, all salons/barbers I know say that the child has to go in alone. My just turned 5 year old wore a mask and went in alone, the salon were great with him and I stood at the window.

ScubaSteven · 12/07/2020 10:32

Oh and B&M sell tiny masks, my 5 year old is in age 3 clothes and it fit him.

I had my hair cut the other day and wasn't asked to wear a mask (hairdresser didn't either, but she did have a visor on). I just limited my time there by having a quick cut - no wash or blowdry.

I suppose it depends on the salon rules.

SephrinaX · 12/07/2020 10:33

Probably bed to check with the salon as some aren't doing kids haircuts at the moment, unless they can attend alone.

My 4 year old had his hair cut yesterday (he was beginning to resemble cousin IT!)

We tried to get him to wear a mask but he point blank refused to put it on despite my best efforts and the offer of chocolate biscuits!

We called the salon and they agreed he didn't have to wear one (their usual rule is 3's and under are exempt). I would ring round a few salons and see what they say. I think most understand that it's difficult with very young children.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/07/2020 10:42

Also my DH was allowed in with him (he did wear a mask).

My hairdressers are taking appointments for children but the parent has to wait outside- big windows so in sight all the time.

Parker231 · 12/07/2020 10:47

And children don’t need to wear a mask but adult customers do and the staff are wearing visors.

My 4 year old just wouldn't wear his for his hair cut. They didn't mind. My 7 year old was happy wearing his

Mintjulia · 12/07/2020 10:54

No. The barber or stylist has to wear a mask but the customer doesn’t.

Our barber offered ds a mask but he didn’t want one.

ihatelockdown · 12/07/2020 10:55

The guidelines are the only the hairdresser needs to wear a visor. However a lot of salons are asking for clients to still wear a mask and many salons aren't doing under 18s, so it's totally down to what your salon is doing

Sally872 · 12/07/2020 10:56

You will need to call the specific hairdresser as there will likely be other rules too.

HandsOffMyRights · 12/07/2020 10:58

I was required to wear a mask for more than 2hrs at my salon (they also had visors on). I won't be returning as I had to remove my glasses and could not see and it was a very long 2hrs (luckily I did not need the toilet either!).

My son, 14, has an appointment there and will be required (they aren't doing dry cuts because of CV and it's a wash and blow dry, so hopefully he'll wear it 20 mins max).

Check with the salon.

Tyjaro75 · 12/07/2020 11:22

You can get child's face masks. My 6 year old and 4 year old have worn them and were quite happy doing so.

britnay · 12/07/2020 12:49

Surely you remove your glasses if you are getting a haircut anyway?

You can wear glasses with a mask.

MRex · 12/07/2020 13:10

Government advice page says that under 11s are exempt, optional if they can wear it safely.
Under 3 should not wear a mask, because it isn't safe.

MontanaSky · 12/07/2020 13:13

I wore a mask to the hairdressers, my children 7 & 3 were exempt.
Hairdresser wore a visor and there was a screen between us and the other client in at the time (2 metre gap).
It was a great experience for us

cassgate · 12/07/2020 13:43

I went to the hairdressers yesterday it was not compulsory to wear a mask. On the under 18 rule, my DD is 16 and needs a hair cut and initially my hairdressers said no under 18’s but changed their mind when I offered to pay full adult price.

Afolnerd · 12/07/2020 13:45

Thanks for all the responses. Seems that everyone is doing it differently.

Usual hairdresser is saying he will have to wear a mask and have his hair washed first. So they are a definite no. They have also increased their price from £9 to £14 for a child cut!
Will have to ring round tomorrow and see what they all say. He would never be ok with going in alone.

Well of course the prices have gone up! Not sure why you'd think they wouldn't!

lifestooshort123 · 12/07/2020 17:04

Took 12yr-old DGS to Turkish barbers yesterday, nobody wore a mask and the price was the same as before.
