Furlough for childcare, but work is there?

there are a lot of threads where people (women) are struggling to go to work as they cannot get childcare.

Some posters on those threads (not a taat) are advising asking employer for furloigh due to childcare.

My question is, is that legal? If the company has work, then how can they furlough? As they need someone to do the work...?

Yes, it’s legal, you can be furloughed due to childcare or caring needs. And also if you’re on long term sick leave or shielding.

Have a look on the gov website which explains it all really clearly.

Employers have the option to furlough for childcare but it's not an automatic right to the employee especially if there is actually work to be done.

The option is to ask, and for employers to grant - but they don’t have to; it’s not an automatic right

Not just women! My DH has come off furlough onto part-time furlough because we have childcare issues until nursery reopens (scotland).

What is part time furlough?

He was offered to go back 3 or 4 days a week, with 2 or 1 day still on furlough. So full pay when he's working and 80% pay for the day(s) still on furlough.

don't you have to be furloughed on 3 week chunks though? How can you be furloughed and not furloughed in the same time period?

So just googled it... you can

it was 3 week chunks before 1st july, but now it is more flexible to allow people to ease backing.

You can be flexi furloughed from 1st July , I've just gone back flexi which works out great at the minute because dc not in school full time.
