Will further / local lockdown result in less people applying for testing?

Watching the news this evening and the news in Leicester - is anyone else thinking if people get sick there will be more people who don't go for a test because they don't want to go under another (local) lockdown?

I hadn’t thought of that but potentially a good point..

I just can’t see how this local lockdown thing works. What’s stopping anyone in Leicester getting in their car & driving to where they can go to the pub or shopping or on holiday?!

The majority of people will do the right thing (most people don't go around littering etc) however if the likelihood is low of "getting caught with covid" and the consequences of being diagnosed are high ie all your contacts need to isolate and there is a potential of another local lockdown if numbers in your area are already high then I fear it might go that way

I suspect people won't get tested if it means losing pay or risking their job

and some others would avoid having their ordinary life disrupted too

But if you do work, what's the alternative? Keep going to work with Covid symptoms?

I know one of my clients has made it very clear to all of their employees that doing so will result in disciplinary proceedings. I'd imagine this will become policy in most workplaces.

Its past and present Government policies and the erosion of workers rights that is helping to spread this.

That will be easy to enforce if someone is at working coughing all over the place. But someone with a fever Saturday/Sunday who feels alright come Monday? I bet a lot of people like that who can't afford to be off work just won't mention it.

People who can't afford to be off work may brush off any symptoms and put them down to cold or allergies, in order to avoid financial consequences.

People of course will brush off the symptoms. it is mild in most cases.
in my family my ds has already complained that he only gets statutory sick pay. it is a conundrum that we are not used to.
Just go to work with a cough?
or assume the virus?

If you don't get tested, and others do the same, the first the authorities know of a surge is an increase of cases into the local hospital, at which point they will have a pretty good idea what has happened, as the rate of cases to infections is pretty well known

The effect will be that any local,lockdown will be a couple of weeks later than it could have been and therefore likely to go on longer than if the rise had been caught earlier

Your choice really, make things worse for everyone

Possibly but then surely hospital admissions would eventually go up which will make it obvious cases are/have risen?

I can understand people may be reluctant though, especially if their income is at risk

I wonder what will happen in Autumn and Winter though when the symptoms of the virus will be similar/the same as symptoms of many other viruses. Back in Feb,before all this became a thing, I had a horrendous fever/fatigue for a few days. No idea what it was but it wiped me out! Thing is, it would never occur to me to go to the GP etc. because it's common to have such symptoms in Autumn/Winter.

It's easy to judge those who would go to work anyway, avoid testing etc. (esp if you have a job you can do from home and would be relatively unaffected if asked to isolate), but if you only get SSP if you have to self-isolate/are sick it's not much at all. A few weeks of that over the winter could cause severe financial hardship for many, especially if both adults in a house have to take time off at once.

It's not the fault of people afraid of losing their houses, going hungry and without heating etc; but of the govt making SSP so low. Having the facilities to get test results out v quickly (ie same day) would help too.

We had a sore throat then cough (maybe covid) in apr.
Dp and i at once so in sept say we could stay off and test. If came back neg i guess we could go back to work earlier than 7d. But then about day 4 dc1 coughing. So would be test for her... But we already tested neg. so could i guess go to work?!

I expect some protesters might not be keen to test with minor symptoms.
The gov has a list of worst 20. So i imagine is keeping a close eye on them. And might do random testibg there.
Imagine though as a hair dresser or takeaway if you test positive then all your customers realise they are being contacted due to contact with you.

In US 2 hairdressers worked with symptoms but luckily didnt pass it on (due to masks). That probably just luck too.
