Scared after hospital stay

I got taken to A & E in an ambulance last night where I was treated all through the night, I then got transferred to a ward and had surgery today and have just been discharged. Apart from having a really rough 24 hours I am now terrified that I will have picked up COVID. Most staff were wearing masks but not all the time & I tried to keep mine on but through all the pain and medication it was off a lot too. I must of been helped/ treated by at least 20 different staff. There were a few patients coughing in a & e too although I was assured it wasn't a Covid area.

I feel like my chances of having caught it are now sky high and I'm going to be an anxious wreck for the next few weeks. Help!

I'm sorry to hear you had to have emergency surgery, than must have been scary and hope your recovery goes well.

I think that I would try an focus on resting, what has happened has gone now and that is all you can do and keep looking after yourself and nourish yourself keep an eye on symptoms and remember in most cases it is mild and it will be OK

And that of course there is a good change you don't have it anyway as rates are low now and you were not in a covid area.

I don’t know if it helps but in the trust I work in we have only 1 person on the covid ward. At the peak we had around 80. I think the chances now are much smaller than before. 💓 really hope you feel better xx

I hope you’re recovering ok from the surgery. I can’t imagine staff in close proximity to you weren’t in masks. We have had national guidance on this and non clinical workers are also wearing masks in certain areas. It’s perhaps difficult to reassure you if you’re feeling so anxious about it but it’s highly unlikely you will have contracted covid.

I have relatives in A&E and they feel very safe

My friend has worked all the way through in itu treating only covid patients
He hasn’t caught it and has tested negative for antibodies
The ppe works 👍

I was worried about this when I went in to have my baby 6 weeks ago. I had complications in labour and had contact with alot of staff. I ended up in theatre with about 12 staff including 2 anesthetists who did not wear masks (I asked a midwife after why they didnt and she said they absolutely should have as they are most likely to pass on the virus). We were all fine though and at the time cases were high in my area

Hope you have a quick recovery.
Really, try not to worry. Easier said than done, I know.
They take all the precautions they can and ensure anyone with the tiniest chance of having the virus are kept far away from others.

I had an emergency hospital stay in early April during the peak. I was convinced I had caught it but nothing, not one symptom. They were testing people on the ward including an elderly lady in the next bed.

They are good at infection control and you will have been barrier nursed.

Most people have symptoms by day 5-6 so get past that and then it's highly likely you don't have it.

Plus infection is low now so you will very likely be fine.

I suffer with anxiety and was frankly shitting myself so I know how you feel.

Thabkyou everyone - I definitely feel calmer reading your messages. I haven't slept since I woke up at 6am yesterday morning so not quite thinking straight and probably fixating on it in my tired mind. Off to bed very soon and hoping to wake up feeling better and less worried.

They will be being very careful and will be tested a lot more than the rest of us. Try to relax so you recover faster. Look after yourself

I am sorry you were in the hospital and hope you are okay. If it helps to reassure you, my auntie was recently in hospital. Two stays of 4 days each time for serious medical issue. She is totally fine and not caught anything! Try not to worry.

So sorry for what you have been through. Hope you recover well. Have to say though I agree from spending time in a hospital this week the majority of staff I came across were not wearing masks. Made me feel uneasy too.
