Feel this is a bit of an over-reaction?

Infant in childcare- temp of 38- down to 36 in under an hour with no meds. Cutting molars atm and screaming on and off as first day in childcare.

Now have to get him tested to get proof it's not coronavirus. He can't return for 7 days if I don't, his brother for 14 days and we all have to isolate. Am a keyworker but can only do home tests for under 5s so out of action for at least a few days. If this happens repeatedly(likely especially in autumn) how the hell will I keep a job?! Anyone know how many times you get sick pay if you're self isolating waiting on results for others in your household?

Also- wibu for me to go food shopping if necessary before results or could he genuinely have the virus with a temp for less than an hour? He's fine btw- eating sleeping drinking playing. Tooth is through hurrah.

Honestly, winter is going to become a nightmare for parents. More than it already has been. My child gets 3000 colds every winter. Cough, minor temp etc. We are never going to be in nursery! I’ve also got a baby who will be hitting teething as we head into Autumn.

I’m going to be taking a sensible view. If my baby is chewing like mad, drooling and has a temp, it’s not corona. I’m not subjecting her to a test every bloody week. Nor am I isolating for 6 months while they come through! If she seems unwell, cough etc. with a temp, then that’s different.

I’ve no idea what the government plans to do with winter virus having identical corona symptoms. I don’t think they have a clue either. I imagine they are just praying for a vaccine 🙈

But..... I have no where else to leave them while I work so even if I didn't tell my boss about it I couldn't go in?

If the temp went above 38 then maybe...... but my eldest spiked up to 38 with EVERY tooth. Nightmare for parents like you say :-(.

Our school has said as we have sent back our Y6 we have affectively signed a contract saying if they show any signs of Covid-19 we have to all self-isolate and get tested and will have to show proof of results before they can go back to school. Presuming this is going to be across the board for the foreseeable.

What if another in their bubble has a temperature? Does the whole bubble and families self-isolate until test results back?

I have even searched for our nearest testing centre as I guess we are going to need it at some point!

It's going to be chaos in winter, we could effectively all be self-isolating one after the other.

I honestly don't know how the hell its going to work in winter . I was in the queue the other day outside and I coughed once to clear my chest I have hay fever . The dirty look I got from a couple in front .Kids cough sneeze etc so it's going to make people on edge.
I had a cough from beginning of January to early March , doctor said it was bronchitis but now I'm not so sure . If I'm off for a cough next winter I'll end up loosing my job.
Your right you can't keep taking time off no one can . I can only hope this is temporary and maybe we'll get some sort of immunity.

Frozen daisy nursery have said bubbles only isolate if a child has a positive test, they will not even inform other parents if a child is sent home with symptoms. So if I chose not to test him, no one would even know. Just means he can't go in for a week. Stupid really as if he had it( clearly not in this case tbh) he would have been infectious before the fever surely.

I'm teaching keyworker children at the moment- staff shortages at work are a nightmare and I can't just take 2 weeks every time my kids get a fever- nor can husband so basically going to be repeatedly testing through winter??

Surely there's a quicker way of testing- under 5s need drive through testing. Or roll antibody tests out? I feel atm you have to give up work if you're in this position? Husband's job is too precarious to be asking for part time or I'd do opposite days to him. I'll have to resign eventually then there'll be even less teachers.......

Hate the idea of subjecting my 11 month old to several covid tests so I can keep a job :-(. God knows how the hell I'm going to do it anyway- no way he'll stay still what a joke. The coronavirus hotline said gp might do it for me so I'll phone them in the morning. Any GPs know if they will or is the woman just hoping they will?!!

They need to speed up testing. At my school if a child had symptoms , they send the bubble home. The child then gets a test. It's happened twice already and both times, the test was back the next day.

Robert Dingwall, part of a group that is involved with SAGE was discussing this on the BBC yesterday.

He was on the side of not forcing isolation on children, because this will take a year off many children's education. He pointed out that they are superspreaders of flu, but we don't enforce any measures, even though the same people are in danger of dying from flu, as Covid. They want testing for data purposes.

So hopefully very soon, we will have sensible guidance.

I should have said, that his group's feeling, is that we are being over cautious.

There's a body of evidence that questions the assumptions we are basing our rules on and we are being well too risk adverse and disrupting society disproportionately.

I also get a high temp day 1 of my period and day 5/6.

I agree with you it poses very good questions about how we define temp requiring isolation and temp due to a temporary reaction in the body.

Afaik Covid causes a high temp that's prolonged and doesn't retreat to the norm even with paracetamol etc.

pooiepooie25 that's great for older kids then- I'm sure there're are lots of keyworkers with under 5s who could really do with this too.

That's exactly what I thought with temps and covid- if the government had included that in guidance for early years and schools then it would certainly help!! I don't believe they have even stated a number- just if "they feel hot" :-|
