Bubbles and 'non essential travel'

Looking for opinions. The new social bubble rule for single households - how does this work with non essential travel?

My husband and I really want to go see his mother and she has suggested we be part of her bubble. But she lives a 5 hour drive away. Ideally we would stay in a holiday rental as she has MH difficulties and although desperately wants to see her son and grandson, finds two adults and a one year old a bit much. This is unrealistic at the moment I know.

But can we drive 5 hours to stay with her for a weekend?

I thought non essential travel had gone out the window now
I thought that was more at the start of this

SundayGirlB · 11/06/2020 10:55

I had thought so but then some holiday let sites are still quoting it which through me.

I don't think anyone's doing the essential travel anymore. You'll be fine

I think travel companies' mention of non-essential travel relates to the FCO advice. Non essential travel are pertains to lockdown is a complete goner within the UK I think, especially as I could potentially drive to McDonalds drive thru down the road. How essential is that?

Non essential travel is not permitted outside of England, and is not meant to happen on public transport within England. In terms of driving within England you can go where you want but cannot stay overnight unless you either live alone or are the designated support for someone living alone (and even then can only stay in that persons property and not in commercial accommodation).

I don't think that holiday rentals will be opening till 4th July. So before then you can form a bubble with her and stay at each other's house but not elsewhere.
Non essential travel within England is allowed so travelling to see her is fine.

Non essential travel is for public transport.
Driving anywhere in England is fine.
