Will your 2yo wear a face mask?

The government has said that children aged two and over need to wear face masks. Will your 2yo wear a mask?

A friend posted the government advice and I commented that my toddler won’t even keep his hat, socks or trousers on never mind a mask. Loads of people including the friend piled on and said I’m an inadequate parent and if I can’t make my child wear a mask he shouldn’t be allowed out in public. I’m not looking forward to going out because people have openly admitted that they plan to confront anyone not wearing a mask. One person said their child also has SEN so if she can be persuaded to wear a mask then anyone can. Others liked his post and said that children or people with SEN who won’t wear a mask should be “locked up” to protect everyone else. I really despair if this is people’s attitude and I’m really worried they’re going to get nasty when my DS inevitably won’t keep a mask on.

I have a two year old and I will not be making him them wear one. If we were in hospital then I would as a compulsory measure but if he has to wear one in shops etc then I just won't be taking him into that environment.

He wouldn't understand and he'd hate it, it wouldn't be fair. Two is still so little.

I think unfortunately if your child can't be relied upon to keep a mask on then you're not going to be able to take him into close contact with other people. The park, yes, the shops, no.

What have I missed?? Everyone needs to wear masks now in public places? Since when?!

My severely autistic child with sensory issues can’t bear the feel of fabric on his skin most days never mind a mask. He’s shielding anyway so not going anywhere but it’s ridiculous to say that everyone should be expected to. For some it just possible.

Personally I think this is ridiculous. A 2 year old cannot possibly be expected to wear a mask safely and the evidence suggests that wearing a mask incorrectly (ie if you keep fiddling with it / touching your face / taking it on and off) is worse than not wearing one at all.
I’m sure that in other countries, they are not expecting such young children to wear them.

@LesbianMummies you child would have a medical exemption. Nobody is saying everyone is expected to wear one.

No chance of getting my 3 year old to wear one. He doesn’t have a diagnosis so wouldn’t be excused, but has sensory issues and there is no chance he would put a face mask on.

Anyone have a source - I thought it was kids 6+

My twins have absolutely no chance. They’re 3, both autistic and cannot stand hats, gloves etc. One needs to wear glasses to help the vision he has (he’s also visually impaired) and even though they’d help him to see, he won’t wear them.

Disgusting. Do they say the same about those with conditions which mean they can’t receive vaccinations?

My twins haven’t been anywhere other than our house and garden since March and I’m not eager to get them out anywhere, but one has an EEG on Monday as it’s urgent, and there’s no chance of him wearing a mask.

DC aged 3 had jabs recently and the protocol was only over 5s wear masks in the GP surgery.

I am pretty sure young children are excluded from the guidance.

What? When was this announced?

A 2 yo isn’t going to be walking around unsupervised and so it would be the parent’s responsibility to make sure it is worn and stays on. If that parent doesn’t want to take on that responsibility then they have to stay at home with the child or make childcare arrangements. It really is as simple as that.

That’s exactly what people were saying. Individuals, not the government - but a lot of people were supportive of the comment that anyone who won’t wear a mask shouldn’t be allowed out in public. Clearly this is the attitude that some people have.

Is it mandatory to wear masks now in the uk?! Crazy to expect a 2 year old to wear one. Here it’s over 13 should wear a mask on public transport , shops , somewhere you can’t social distance appropriately.

My 3 year old took her sun hat off approx 500 times a day over the nice weather we’ve just had. She just won’t keep things on her head! I stuck it back on, wear one myself to model, even explain why now she’s a bit older but nope. She has no additional needs, just fussy!

To me, a mask is more risky for her. As she won’t keep it on and will therefore be touching it constantly!

It’s only for public transport anyway & I don’t plan to take her on any for a while..

@GiveMeAllTheGin8 it’s Mandatory on public transport from June 15th unless medically exempt or very young child.

My toddler gets terrible wheezing with colds which is made worse by breathing in cold air. I had some success this winter convincing her to wear a snood over her nose and mouth. If face coverings become mandatory on public transport/ at appointments or other necessary places this may be an option.
Highly doubt that this will be required for under 5s
