i am not a foreign holiday kind of person, and if i did take one, it would mean a lot of time off work but i do agree with the proposal, that people should be quarantined after coming to UK from abroad.
does anyone else?

Definitely as it's what caused this mess. Why should us vulnerable people keep dying because everyone wants a holiday but wants to waltz back to work like they did from italy.
It may actually work now we will have masks on PT.
However it is a bit of a distraction as very few countries have higher rates than us anyway but it will benefit all countries as if uk get the rates down we are less likely to take it to them (was 1/375 the other day) so probably someone on a plane.
Also other countries will be having their own peaks that they may not spot in time.

I'm not sure what purpose it serves in the current format. Person arrives from wherever, travels, probably by public transport, to the place where they will quarantine, stopping for lunch/coffee on the way.

I do agree with it when flights start up again in any meaningful way. There has been a lot of hysteria about it not being in place over the last couple of months but there have been very few people coming in (most flights are freight including passenger flights which have carried freight) and those have been in lockdown in their country of origin, possibly (much) stricter than ours and then coming here into lockdown.

However, while I think it would be a bit rich to quarantine someone from eg New Zealand, if you are coming in from eg Brazil you should be quarantined.

I do wonder whether 14 days is too long. I know the incubation period can be very long but in most cases you have symptoms within 5 days. I think 7 days is more realistic (and much easier to manage without going out for food etc while online deliveries are still so restricted).

I would say 7 days from low risk countries and 14 days from high risk countries and possibly nothing from the very lowest like NZ. It's easy enough to say on a plane exactly what rules apply to people coming off that flight.

I would also say 7 days for people coming in by ferry/train/car.

It's not that easy to police but spot checks could be done.

I think we’ve missed the boat on this one. Would have been sensible to do this 3 months ago, but little to no value now.

lovelyupnorth · 04/06/2020 21:30

I’m February it was a good idea

Now it’s a waste of time as we are the worst risk to most of the rest of the world.

It’s 4 months later and a waste of time.

Bit like when the track and trace app finally goest live in September all we will know is DC and his mates made a mint out of it.

Whole fucking government is a joke.

LilyPond2 · 04/06/2020 21:34

I think a blanket quarantine that applies even if you're coming from a country with much lower infection rates than the UK is pointless and will harm our economy without any rational justification. I agree with quarantine for people returning from places with significantly higher infection rates than the UK (including places with officially lower rates, but where there is reason to believe that official figures do not reflect the true infection rate).

Bol87 · 04/06/2020 21:49

Personally, I’d rather they just banned flights from countries such as Brazil for the time being! But seeing as that won’t happen, it makes no sense to me to have to quarantine coming back from a country with lower infection rates than ours! But total sense from countries where it’s not yet peaked..

They'll never start back up if a 14 day quarantine is in place, who would go abroad only to have to spend 14 days at home etc?

There has been a lot of hysteria about it not being in place over the last couple of months but there have been very few people coming in

Its not hysteria, apparently it was 95k, inc 10,000 from Milan at the height of their CV peak, there was zero restriction.

Having a quarantine now is pointless and will destroy the travel industry.
