Piers Morgan is saying 62 thousand have died

On GMB this morning he said this. Why is his figure almost double the official number? Not being goady, I genuinely don't understand the discrepancy, does anyone know where he is getting these figures from?

OP posts:

I guess it's due to the ONS figures released which show the overall death rate compared to this time last year. There's a discrepancy of 30k + in th overall mortality rate.

PicsInRed · 19/05/2020 08:52

come on 100,000

(Is what the media are saying to themselves)

Sertchgi123 · 19/05/2020 08:53

Piers Morgan is a twat.

GinandGingerBeer · 19/05/2020 08:54

.........Which will probably be some cases of covid where it didn't go on the death certificate and the rest due to people not getting emergency treatment for stokes and heart attacks and then there's the people who couldn't continue with treatment or surgery.

Whatsthis1515 · 19/05/2020 08:54

Sorry but Piers Morgan is a c*nt.

If there really are that many excess deaths I'm sure loads of them are now caused by lockdown, the lack of NHS services and people's fear of leaving the house.

110APiccadilly · 19/05/2020 09:04

He really should not be attributing all excess deaths to CV19; we know there are excess lockdown deaths (lack of medical treatment, suicides, people in care homes just giving up) as well. It's really important that we're watching both as otherwise we could increase deaths overall by prolonging lockdown because of lockdown deaths, not virus deaths.

SockYarn · 19/05/2020 09:04

Piers Morgan, that well known scientist and epidemiologist. Hmm

swampusdonkus · 19/05/2020 09:06

Chris Giles the Economics Editor of the Financial Times does a weekly analysis of excess deaths in the UK. Worth a look on his Twitter Feed. His most recent figure put the number at circa 60,000.

Ideally, we would try and divide excess deaths into three groups: definitely virus, possibly virus, definitely not virus (this will be deaths caused by lockdown). The balance of the first and the last group is crucial.

StopGo · 19/05/2020 09:18

My DH died on Sunday, his death won't be recorded as a CV-19 death. However, he is one of the thousands neglected by the NHS because he didn't have the virus. An unnecessary death caused by CV-19 neglect.

The ONS data will be interesting

Keepdistance · 19/05/2020 09:20

It is hardly surprising, deadly virus plus no testing no tracking. People going out exercising, others ignoring the SI rules. Nhs not taking people in when SOB. Nyc had lots of covid heart attacks at peak.
Tbh as a previous poster did a thread unfortunately there are very likely to be dead bodies left around where people living alone didnt get any help.

Bluntness100 · 19/05/2020 09:22

I haven’t seen it but there are very many excess deaths, from suicide to not seeking doctors support when required. They are not Covid as such, but related to lock down.

Piers is being a bit of a twat though, he tweeted the other day that he needs to keep challenging the government because lives depend on him doing so, which is so arrogant it is disturbing.

He’s turning himself into a paraody of Katie what’s her name.

jasjas1973 · 19/05/2020 09:34

No one else is challenging the Govt on their lies over care homes, testing, lockdown or the ministers they've put fwd on TV shows who have had no knowledge of the facts.
Yesterday he had Care home owners and two sisters, whose mum had died t a care home of CV, Johnson lied about the lockdown advice and the protective arm rubbish,,, all this is going unchallenged.
Today, a care home owner said he had a letter from CQC, dated 31/3, care homes have to relieve pressure on hospitals...

But blame the messenger!

My partners Nan died recently with a fever and cough, no test done, no mention of CV, earlier in the out break, a friends stepdad died, GP strongly suspected CV... again no mention of it on death certificate.

AnyFucker · 19/05/2020 09:38

A bloke from ONS is on BBC1 right now

Bluntness100 · 19/05/2020 09:40

Are you kidding, it’s what nearly everyone does 🤣

AJPTaylor · 19/05/2020 09:41

Could well be but is look for actual facts before taking anything that he says as true. Why are you watching him?

StopGo That's terribly sad news. And in these isolating times, I hope you have loving support to see you through.

ImInAStateOfMind · 19/05/2020 09:45

The Government themselves have said that true figures are approx 3x what is reported - as a result of the ONS data. Have a google.

Humphriescushion · 19/05/2020 09:49

I would imagine this is the excess deaths as well as covid 19 deaths.

Sedlescombe · 19/05/2020 09:49

The government only count the people who die in hospital and recently those dying in care homes. If someone dies at home they aren't being counted. Where that 62k comes from is taking the average of - I think - the last five years to find a "normal" death rate each day and comparing it to the recent weeks to count an "excess" death rate. Its not precise but is a reasonable estimate as to how many people are actually dying as a result of the virus

Humphriescushion · 19/05/2020 09:50

Oh so sorry stopgo.

eosmum · 19/05/2020 09:50

@StopGo - I'm truly sorry for your loss. Flowers

Sedlescombe · 19/05/2020 09:54

StopGo So sorry for your loss

jasjas1973 · 19/05/2020 10:04

@Bluntness100

No i'm not, some like Kuenssberg or Marr will ask a question and then just meekly accept the answer, she recently ran a piece about how hard CV-19 was for a for a new Govt coming into power with a failed social care system...... it was as if Labour had been in power for the last 10 years!!!

The daily briefing questions are selected and offer very limited come back, indeed the govt switches of the journalists mic.

ITV is one of two national broadcasters, outrageous they can refuse to be questioned by Morgan.
