Loss of smell and taste - new symptoms announced

It's just been announced on BBC 1 lunchtime news that loss of smell and taste are now recognised symptoms of Covid 19. Looks like thousands more people than thought will have had the virus. I lost my smell and taste and few weeks ago for about 11 days. At the time they said it wasn't Covid so didn't need to isolate. Who knows how many people will have been affected by this.

Are you watching a repeat of the news? These have been symptoms for at least a month.

My SIL (FL worker) had those mild symptoms and tested positive, so self isolated a week and then was back in the ambulance!

I’m sure thousands of people have had it and not realised...

Finally, it's taken them long enough to make it official!

StealthPolarBear · 18/05/2020 13:21

No it's in the news today that they have been added officially

JustStayHome · 18/05/2020 13:22

This has been said an awful lot for atleast 4-6 weeks, It isnt new

I am watching today's lunchtime news. It is the headlines. They weren't officially recognised by the government as symptoms. Now it seems they are.

@DivGirl they’ve now added this to the list of symptoms you have to isolate with

MarcelineMissouri · 18/05/2020 13:24

I think they were always recognised as symptoms, it’s just they can now see that a high enough % of people who’ve tested positive have had these symptoms so it’s worth getting people to isolate if they experience this.

My wife and i were ill with suspected Covid back in March, she had loss of smell and taste for a week, then they announced on March 21st that it was suspected as a symptom. Once we heard that it pretty much confirmed our suspicions of contracting it

I lost my sense of smell weeks ago, I did self isolate immediately because it could have been covid, I don't know but I wasn't about to risk it. This is another example of the govt moving at a glacial pace before finally doing what clearly had to be done all along. How many more times? 😠

I don't know if what I had was covid or not, but even if it was I am not assuming any immunity, especially after a mild case. Hoping, but not assuming. Slightly anxiously awaiting more info on suspicions that loss of smell may indicate possibly of long term neurological problems.
