Unless the government changes tack, the UK's lockdown will have been for nothing

A great article by the Professor of Global Public Health at the University of Edinburgh, pointing out that by releasing lockdown BEFORE putting in place any measures to track and trace cases, Boris Johnson and the Government are setting the UK up for a massive second wave in a few weeks.

Yes, yes, yes to all of that. That's exactly the problem. We need to fully commit to the hardest option: test and trace - it may be difficult technically to pull off, but it should also be the quickest, safest, cheapest, and least economically damaging path out of here, if we can manage to do it right. To give up without trying because it is is hard and meekly accept the economic and health costs of that choice is despicable.

He hasn’t released lockdown. Lockdown is still on. The first bit of ‘stay alert’ (awful) is to remain at home where possible. I agree he could have been a LOT clearer & more direct on that but really, not much has changed!

Yep but a lot of posters on here will tell you it’s an overreaction sadly.

Hagisonthehill · 12/05/2020 23:20

There isn't that much change though.
The problem with let lockdown for all countries is that the virus didn't and wasn't ever going to go away. All it did was paint us into a corner that we aren't step out if.

TiddyTid · 12/05/2020 23:29

We're fucked, basically.

Bool · 12/05/2020 23:31

We’re fucked if we do and more fucked if we don’t.

Barbie222 · 12/05/2020 23:33

Isn't that the plan though now that all the ICU beds are ready for us?

Bool · 12/05/2020 23:37

It’s always been the plan. Flatten the curve so it comes in under the number of ICU beds. Now that that has worked and beds are available we have to get back to work and then wait for the next wave to them lockdown again. They are slowly letting people catch the virus. I don’t understand what other way there is as we don’t have a vaccine, earliest will be within 2 years and we may never have one.
