Don't really know what I'm looking for in terms of effectiveness and where to buy?!

I don't know what they're like but I've just bought some from hype.

TheCanterburyWhales · 11/05/2020 20:30

We have to wear them here (Italy) and apparently the best ones are the papery one use only surgical ones. The fancy schmancy ones with filters and gubbins are apparently no better.

jobhunter7 · 11/05/2020 20:37

www.etsy.com/uk/market/masks

Cambridge masks are supposed to be good (just going off what I've read) but there is a wait for a few months, I believe material and sponge masks are useless to the wearer in terms of not getting the virus but help not to spread it.

AZP3 · 11/05/2020 20:40

I don’t see the point of them. They offer zero protection to you according to that document. Just stop you spreading to other people if you have it.

Tentativesteps133 · 11/05/2020 20:43

AZP3 you don't see the point in trying to limit asymptomatic carriers spreading it?

missmouse101 · 11/05/2020 20:54

eBay has lots of cotton ones that can be washed.

Wetcappuccino · 11/05/2020 20:58

Playmobil website! £4.99 for a plastic face mask that can be washed in soapy water and use a facial tissue as a filter.

hopeishere · 11/05/2020 20:59

There needs to e a public information campaign on how to use them probably. I see people with them not covering their nose / lifting them for a smoke / hanging round their neck.

TimeWastingButFun · 11/05/2020 21:02

AZP3 they do stop you spreading it to others, yes.
But you don't see the point of it.

rainbowunicorn · 11/05/2020 21:55

@AZP3 that has got to be one of the stupidest comments I have seen on here in a long time.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/05/2020 07:37

Proper masks designed for healthcare professionals should not be used by members of the public. They need to be fitted properly and changed several times a day to be effective, which is impractical.

As a member of the public, the purpose of a mask is not really to protect you, but other people, if you have the virus without knowing about it. But if I wear a mask to protect you and you wear a mask to protect me, the level of protection is quite significant, so worth doing.

There are lots of instructions to make a no sew washable mask out of old fabric, kitchen roll and hair bands and this is the type you should be looking at. Make several so you can wash them after every use, otherwise your potentially attaching contaminated fabric to your face.

onemorepringle · 12/05/2020 07:38

Don’t use surgical ones! FFS

TheCanterburyWhales · 12/05/2020 21:56

We are wearing the surgical ones because a) the govt tells us to b) many shops etc won't let you in without them.

onemorepringle · 12/05/2020 22:21

@TheCanturburyWhales you’ve got very confused there. The government has specifically said not to wear surgical ones as they’re needed for medics, but to just wear cloth ones. How have you got it quite so confused?!

StrawberryJam200 · 12/05/2020 22:24

@TheCanterburyWhales is in Italy, but that's not obvious unless you've been hanging around these threads for a while....

testing987654321 · 12/05/2020 22:28

Apart from the fact she mentioned it a few posts earlier. Easily missed though.

I ordered masks from Etsy on Thursday last week, they arrived yesterday.
They have an adjustable nose ‘fold’ and have a pocket for a tissue or equivalent.
Being an asthma sufferer I find it incredibly uncomfortable and find myself trying to take deep breaths and then panicking.
I’m wearing mine for very short periods in an attempt at getting used to it.
