Why are people being so bloody rude?!!

I live in a popular UK tourist destination (national park) and the police are in force stopping visitors entering the county.

I can understand why, we have a higher than average death rate, for such a rural area.

But I’m so fed up of seeing rude signs and comments everywhere... our local village has a sign saying ‘go home second home owners’ the local pub has put on fb that ‘tourists aren’t welcome, stay home’

Again, I understand it. But what happened to please?... Such as... ‘Please can you stay away for now, we would really appreciate and hope to see you soon.’

This area relies on tourism but they’re alienating themselves and making themselves out to be complete twats imo.

Other include ‘we don’t want you here’ and ‘you are the problem, go home, you are not welcome’

I agree "we don't want you but in August you ll see us on the news complaining about the worst tourist season ever and asking for government help". At least, thats what Im anticipating for France...

RyanBergarasTeeth · 09/05/2020 17:45

The local pub in particular sounds stupid saying they dont want tourists... Are they aware locals can't drink there as well?! But i agree op its stupid when their livelyhood relies on 2nd home owners and tourists and come summer they will be begging for bail outs and complaining of no custom.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/05/2020 17:46

They must feel that the goal justifies the means. And possibly that being polite doesnt have the desired effect. People are really scared, and really fed up of others not following the guidelines and that affects the way they communicate.

FascinatingCarrot · 09/05/2020 17:46

If some people are thick as mince as to ignore the clear guidelines to stay at home, and decide to trot up anyway, they deserve all they get.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 09/05/2020 17:47

Still makes no sense. The pub is shut so theres no need for signs. The other signs are daft too as anyone going to their 2nd home wont give a shit anyway.

DoorKnobber · 09/05/2020 17:48

But @FascinatingCarrot, there’re getting some harsh word which are going to effect the person saying them more than the person visiting

OP posts:
DoorKnobber · 09/05/2020 17:49

Exactly @RyanBergarasTeeth.

I do ‘t condone people coming here, but I think the local have lost sight on what we thrive on normally

Ah I’ve found the opposite, although it’s not a huge tourist area but we get our fair share of visitors, everyone is being so friendly and polite to each other in passing, I think it’s lovely.

Lucindainthesky · 09/05/2020 17:50

I'm glad to hear that these businesses are being firm. It'll get the message across far better than your suggested wording. I live in the south west and hope we are similarly "rude" this year and people stay well away.

MrsJimmyPerez · 09/05/2020 17:50

It’s the same where I am and has upset me so much that I’ve made lots of pretty stickers saying ‘welcome to ......, enjoy your walk’ then whenever I see yet another nasty Go Home type sign I put my little sticker on it Smile

Elmerrrrrrrr · 09/05/2020 17:51

Those types of places have always pretty much hated outsiders and now they just have an excuse to display it openly. Imo.

DoorKnobber · 09/05/2020 17:53

Yes @Elmerrrrrrrr that is exactly right!!! Many locals are revelling in it just because they can.

Great idea @MrsJimmyPerez

Samtsirch · 09/05/2020 18:09

You are right, they do need to be careful about how they word things, they will be desperate for trade to get business kick started once every where is open again. They are shooting them selves in the foot.

Unravellingslowly · 09/05/2020 18:30

Why should they make polite signs when covidiots are wanting to turn up and infect (kill) your family and cause mass deaths because the rural hospital is set up (overstretched already) for the amount of local people?

The selfish people turning up need telling straight. They are the type to ignore polite signs because they think that couldn’t possibly mean them.

Just look how many people are ignoring the lockdown rules.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2020 18:36

While it's never necessary to be rude, if anyone the signs actually apply to sees them it's because they don't give a shit about the lockdown constraints.

So unless locals are posting the signs on social media, no one should be getting 'alienated' by them, should they?Confused

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 09/05/2020 18:39

I agree OP, I understand the reason for signs but why not be polite about it. I thought just the same thing when I first saw them on the news. It just makes me think of people with pitch forks and a mob mentality, it's nasty.

As others have said when this all calms down they will be the ones wanting to know where the tourists are. With new signs up saying all welcome we are open for business!

Why not take a positive step and make up some nice polite signs?! Start a new trend!

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 09/05/2020 18:42

@MrsJimmyPerez - Yes, I like what you are doing!

Bluntness100 · 09/05/2020 18:42

I agree op, there are ways to get your message across and being rude is simply a sign of lack of intelligence when you’re biting the hand that feeds you.

Bluntness100 · 09/05/2020 18:45

So unless locals are posting the signs on social media, no one should be getting 'alienated' by them, should they

I think you underestimate people because rudeness offends most decent people, even if it’s not aimed at them

Soubriquet · 09/05/2020 18:50

Cos the “please stay away. We appreciate your patience” signs are too polite and too long, people won’t read them

It’s straight to the point to say “stay home!”

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 09/05/2020 18:56

How about:
'Please go home second home owners’. Grin
'tourists aren’t welcome, please stay home’. Grin
‘you are the problem, please go home, you are not welcome. Grin

There are so many thick and ignorant people around that I really can't blame the people in your village. People in tourist and rural locations must be sick to their back teeth of being invaded. Pictures in the press show people aren't listening. Being rude may be the only way to get through to the covidiots.

KingJarvis · 09/05/2020 19:00

They’d be moaning if the tourists stayed away permanently. Perhaps they should

DoorKnobber · 09/05/2020 19:39

@ErrolTheDragon yes they’re on FB too! And twitter! Local businesses and locals. Which means they’re basically also having a go at the ones that are not coming... which could be detrimental to the industry in the future. It’s not nice not feeling like you’re welcome
