Drinking more in lockdown

Is it just me that seems to have taken up a wine drinking hobby in lockdown?

I've never been a big drinker (aside from when I was at uni). I'd have the odd wine/gin here and there but since lock down I get through a bottle of wine a week!

I wonder if it's just because DH is home now so I have company?

Anyone else the same? Is it just because we're bored?

Definitely not a stealth boast. I wouldn't boast about how much/little I drink. If it evens the scales (pardon the pun) we've eaten 2 giant dairy milk bars between us in about a week. And I do mean giant.

How many nights a week in a row drinking would someone class as too much?

I don't mean stumbling upstairs at the end and peeing in the wardrobe state.

Was just curious what people thought?

Because the Council weren't collecting the glass recycling, DH and I moved to BOXES of wine. One didn't last a weekend 🥴.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 10/05/2020 00:27

I have started drinking loads more. Before lockdown I was not teetotal but not far off. Now, I am having 1-2 bottles of wine a week. About 1 large glass most nights but not every night.

It's not sustainable but lockdown isn't forever, so.....

This thread reminds me of school days and boasting how much we had had to drink the night before! OP is drinking more than she usually does (and there are other squares like me who only drink socially) so it's not really relevant whether a bottle of wine a week is much or not!

AgnesNaismith · 10/05/2020 11:46

One a day here unfortunately!

Well, I’m most def not sharing Blush

But I will say op - our consumption most def went up at first. The last few weeks we are back to 2 days per week but I’m still drinking far to much on those days. A mixture of boredom and why the hell not. Not really cool though tbh

123Dancewithme · 10/05/2020 11:58

I don’t drink, but a bottle a week definitely doesn’t sound excessive Grin

TimeWastingButFun · 10/05/2020 12:03

Ha definitely not just you! Look at how empty the wine shelves got at one point. My husband makes a GandT at about 6.30, it's getting earlier and earlier - nearer 5 now!

cookiesandcream27 · 10/05/2020 12:07

We are definitely drinking more. As others have said it's due to boredom and something to look forward to at the end of another mind numbing day.

Usually I will have a gin and tonic or three. On a weekend I can easily polish off a bottle of wine over an evening. It's not great but it's just how it is at the minute.

I still try and have a couple of dry days a week. More for my waist line than anything!

SouthWestmom · 10/05/2020 12:10

If it's a change it's really sensible to be aware of it. Because the next change could be every day and then you're drinking more than the guidelines etc.

FWIW I'm really habit forming and did dry January because I'm stuck in more as a new carer for dc. Was creeping into every day drinking. I've stuck with it and am not drinking at all.

British culture is very boozy and people are so scornful if anyone worrying about their drinking levels. It's weird.

toolatetooearly · 10/05/2020 12:12

Yup. If covid19 doesn't get me, liver failure definitely will.

imsooverthisdrama · 10/05/2020 12:13

You rebel a bottle of wine a week and your worried?
I get 3-4 bottles of wine when I go to the supermarket and I try and make them last the week plus the odd gin .Confused
I'm drinking more I know but I try and have a couple of dry days and weeknights I drink after 9pm so I'll have 2 glasses max those nights .

Bigfishylittlefishy · 10/05/2020 12:16

A bottle of wine a week would be far too much for me. I haven’t changed my habits I’m still drinking no alcohol. That’s not a boast though, as I’m currently too fat and make up for the lack of alcohol with excess sugar.

Alcohol just makes me feel ill, even one glass.

QuimJongUn · 10/05/2020 12:17

We're actually drinking less. The first week of LD we overindulged every night what with the novelty of dh wfh so no 6am alarm but we soon realised that when you do that, the weekend sort of blurs into the rest of the week. So we've made a bar in our kitchen complete with fairy lights and 'jukebox' (ie a 14 hour playlist of our favourite songs which we put on shuffle) and we 'meet' there at 7ish on Friday and Saturday. Sometimes we even bother getting dolled up. It breaks the monotony of the week and we've found we actually prefer it to going out! We have dinner about 9.30 so there's not a huge amount of drinking time, which wasn't a conscious decision. We're drinking a lot less than pre LD when we'd often go to the pub on a Fri/Sat before drinking at home, and often go out for dinner/drinks midweek too.

DateandTime · 10/05/2020 12:20

And there was me being quite pleased with myself because I had less than half a bottle last night Grin

I'm definitely drinking more and it is starting to bother me a bit actually, hence cutting back Blush yesterday.
