I can't possibly go back to work until I've had a haircut

Obviously I can and I suspect I shall have to but honestly it's a disaster. I'm generally very low maintenance. I've only once had a manicure in my life, no hair colour, no tanning, eyebrows, lashes etc but I do have my hair styled properly every six weeks. It's probably the only thing that stops me looking homeless.

I imagine most people will look quite different when we go back, or will others have managed to keep on top of things themselves?

This tutorial has helped many to cut their own hair. Easier than you'd think. I guess a lot of people will cut down on the expense of salon visits even when lockdown is lifted after they have learned to cut their own hair

I used hairdresser's thinning scissors this week as my hair was a big triangle.
Now I look like Elvira/Limhal, mullet central!

That's the famous MN haircut. Not much good if you have a pixie and you haven't had a haircut for over 12 weeks. I'm now rocking the 'sensible mum' look. Not helped by lockdown weight gain.

I always laugh at the idea of that being a 'mumsnet' haircut. I have cut my hair for about 25 years using the very same method.

I was wondering the other day about people who get a regular cut or have short hair hair to keep on top of.... a hat maybe

I have a pixie cut (every 6 weeks), and really thick coarse hair so finding a you tube tutorial has been impossible so far. I did the same as middleager with the thinning scissors and now look like I have some kind of weird short mullet!

I cut and colour mine at home so not having an issue. DP or DSis does length,.I wing it with thinning scissors and box dye.

Apart from the fringe, I am actually quite liking it. Fortunately have a tiny amount of grey for a 47 year old!

I am completely incapable, but even I have managed to cut my fringe without wrecking it and take some weight out of my hair. The length is ok as I don't use straighteners or hair dryers so the condition is decent.

The colour could become an issue - highlights growing out, and grey hair growing in!

I have a very outgrown short sharp cut. Very low maintenance except for the six weekly trip to the hairdresser. I'm scared to try and do anything to it myself but I'm seriously considering one of those little ponytails you sometimes see on Yorkshire terriers, to keep it out of my eyes

It’s just called the MN haircut because it was all the rage here some years ago, a bit like the MN scarf; it’s not because people think it’s an MN invention or something.

I used to cut my hair like that when I was a young woman, many years before MN was a thing.

What sort of haircut do you have Op? If it's a short style you could order clippers on line and have a go yourself? There are various sized guard attachments meaning you can cut it to the length you want. E.g., use a shorter guard around the back and sides, graduating to longer and longer lengths on top. Lots of tutorials to look at online. You'll need two mirrors and nerves of steel.

If you just have a grown out fringe, that's easy to trim with sharp scissors.

I'm quite good at this sort of thing and cut everyone's hair in our house. If you don't feel confident and don't have any sort of artistic eye for that sort of thing, probably best not to attempt!

For anyone with grey roots showing (or white tufts ) a good temporary solution is something like Colour Wow root touch up. It's like hair make up/coloured powder you dab onto roots to conceal them. You can also buy a spray like Loreal Paris magic root touch up in various shades. It washes out so is a good quick fix until you can get to a hairdressers.

I only go to the hairdresser about once a year anyway usually so makes no difference to me! I have long fairly well-behaved hair which I don't dye and no greys yet (not that I think I'll bother dyeing them when they come). At worst it will look a bit more straggly than usual. I'm a hairdresser's worst nightmare! 🤭

I resorted to brown eyeshadow on my roots.

My issue is highlights. My roots are white. I'm almost certainly 100 per cent white. I've aince used a box dye, root touch up, twice now, but there's not enough of it.

A bigger box brown dye will cover my remaining highlights and I hate one colour.

I tried a highlights kit a few years ago, but it was a disaster.

This summer may be the summer of the wig for me.

Mine is luckily just getting longer so I'm tying it up but DH is starting to look like Krusty the clown (random side tufts ) and now won't leave the house without a hat on
